Depending how you look at it. That 4.0 is proven and there are now Tundras with that engine and 300K miles
I dont really want them to "improve" that engine as it is probably one of the few V6's that are quite good and "improve" means make that engine more complicated to maintain (aka costly)

Yeah...in response to walleye, I think Toyota's MO is "high efficiency with proven technologies". Besides, they may not have created any new engine marvels lately, but they haven't needed to...Ford's recent engine innovations have made them competitive with Toyota, but if they needed all this new tech just to catch up, what does that say about Ford? Toyota seems to have more capable engineering, getting more from older (but reliable) tech.

yep its almost like saying there are no improvements to 22RE or 2.7 :) ....none are needed to those engines. Longer they stay the way they are longer people will enjoy owning them.
There are simple things that make engine very good. Like timing chain vs timing belt. I dont know why car companies so hand up on putting timing belt.
I dont see how that improves anything yet they use belt and force consumers to have it replaced at small intervals. And that is one very costly replacement.
Sealed wheel bearings are another WTF in category of Darwin awards for car companies. I mean it is good for them since now you have to replace whole bearing instead of adding grease and setting preload.
    Its a scam...:D

Custom body work...boat trailer came of hitch, hit tailgate and Rammed stick thru lower valance while towing boat....hmmm, Maybe I should get a new boat?!?
I think I'll jump in here as well!

I doubt Toyota will follow Ford's footsteps in regards to their business model of what consumer's actually want...I mean, Toyota didn't become the #1 world wide auto manufacturer by accident?

While Ford is always scrambling to come up with something the end user wants, they often miss the mark! example, Ford Raptor, Best factory off-road truck (maybe ever?) but the $40K price tag, dismal tow rating and GVWR (6,000lbs and 1,090lbs, respectively) make it an over-price niche vehicle that doesn't make sense from a business standpoint (let's call it a negative ROI). The masses that will buy a F150 are not looking for the desert racing, hill jumping and overstated paint schemes that the Raptor offers.

Toyota is smart in that they produce vehicles that will appeal to the largest number of people, overall! If none of these wish list items become available on the next generation of Tacoma's do you think the sales numbers will be down? I think the current issues they have will impact their sales more than cup-holders, laser beams, heated seats, shitters (I'd probably check that option box, as long as it was a direct ejection model shitter!) Lets not forget the fuel standards that are coming out too, that will impact what engines will be picked for each model.

    Back on track...

I'd like to see some cosmetic changes such as a real front bumper, better and more skid plates, a Limited version (leather, heated and power seats), stouter mud-flaps (current ones suck ass) less obtrusive stereo "pod" and more wheel options.
Someone said sunroof option I'd go one further and say moonroof Toyotas traditionally have the largest opening moonroofs I have ever seen!!!

I'd like to see a Power rear window option (like the tundra). I have a double cab and my rear slider window barely gets used because I can't reach it.

If we got the Hilux they could sell current and updated Tacoma as what it is a midsize truck given the current size of the Tundra and all the SUV options of Xsmall all the way up to xxxLarge just a thought or maybe just let the few who really want a Hilux the option of special ordering one!

    1. Sunroof Option
    2. More towing power (newer version of the 4.0 will solve this)
    3. Stiffer rear suspension (I missed out of the TSB for the rear)
    4. Bed Light
    5. Bigger outside mirrors/heated
    6. Power rear window like the Tundra

Even without any of these, I still love my truck!

heres my thoery its not special..but everyone i no with a tundra is gettin the same fuel milage if not better around town wit drivin habits just like mine...so if they gettin better fuel milage with way more power and a heavy truck y couldnt we get better out of taacomas wit that set up cruisin being easy on it it would accelerate plenty fast without being on it and when u need it u have tons of horsepower and torgue and be gettin slightly worst fuel milage..at that point i think a v8 is very reasonable with the corect design and gearin

Here's some more supporting evidence for diesels in the U.S.:

    http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2010-04-27-dieselcars27_ST_N.htm

Looks like GM is investing a bunch of money to upgrade their V8 engines for their trucks and SUV's to be more fuel effiecient, including adding DIRECT INJECTION!:
    http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2010-04-27-gm-engines-jobs_N.htm

As jayridinfast stated these full size trucks are getting closer and closer to the fuel economy of the midsize trucks! Toyota needs to make some dramatic upgrades to the Tacoma drivetrain!!!

I hope for Toyota's sake that they have something up their sleeve. Not something half-assed like a hybrid that gets 10% better mileage, but a true upgrade that keeps the fuel economy significantly better than the full sized truck market.

I was blown away when I saw how good the fuel mileage is on current full sized trucks. It may have been mentioned, but the 2010 Silverado hybrid is rated at 21/22 (and the non-hybrid at 15/22). I don't see how my Tacoma at 17/21 can compete.

The V6 Tacoma needs to be at least 5-10 mpg better than the full-sized pickups...they need to be at 30 mpg for the 6 and 35-40 mpg for the 4, and basically RIGHT NOW.

Bring the Hi-lux turbo diesel to the U.S. That would about do it. If Mahindra can bring a "clean diesel" to the states I don't see why Toyota can't do it. In addition to the increase in fuel economy you get the added benefit of not taking as big of a hit on mpg while towing and the added durability of a diesel engine. Win/win.

"This is like when I was on the Ranger forums. Everyone wants a V8 Ranger or a diesel. They have no idea why they would need those options other than it would be cool. "

    a diesel's a no brainer.

and if someone doesn't like this thread... do us all a favor and don't whine about it, just move on.

A "Limited" model. I know most people here might not buy it because it's too "pretty", but I'd be all over that.
