The same people into disco and pacers are the same people who today are into overlanding with tortoiseshell glasses in their fully-built Tacomas, sipping macchiatos in their rooftop tent. Y’know, trendy types who follow the herd. There was real grit and inspiration in the 70s (though as a child at the time, I missed most of it). The birth of punk rock, great R&B, movies that didn’t end in a car chase. Weak weed, cheap booze, and great comedy. The uninformed only remember disco and ugly cars, which is an easy way to sum up a complex time, like any time.

My mother was in labour giving birth to me at about the same time the MC5 issued their decree (with big hair):

I was talking with a car salesman friend about my new Tacoma. He knows how I like to mod and asked me if this was going to be an "overland" build. I sold him a tricked out FJ about a year ago, and he never said that word then. It was the first time I heard that term in regard to autos, I looked at him like he was speaking latin

    My brother,

Did you have the privilege of being around "grown ups" during your childhood? Did any of them tell you how great life used to be when they were kids? Did you roll your eyes and not believe them?

Different band, different decree, really raw and dedicated to the 1st world "overlanders" who really aren't

Neither of my parents were nostalgic for their childhoods. They both left home ASAP. So in my case, at least, I am not continuing any tradition of lamenting the past. I think there is something to be lamented in the passing of the pre-information age. We are kinda living out “revenge of the nerds”.......the shit that geeks used to masturbate thinking about is now the greater part of most people’s everyday lives.

Anyways.......let’s not leave the 80s out. That would discount Steve Albini. One of my favourite Americans.

"Overlanding" means spending $200 on a Pelican case to protect $100 of camping gear, instead of a $50 Rubbermaid container from Home Depot.

Well, I'm sure some overlanders have an actual need for military grade hardcases, like to store espresso makers and so forth when camping.
