The 4.88 mega thread!!

What would happen if I changed to this gearing on a stock truck? Asking for a friend.

 

Really really high RPMs. Really high. It would be like driving 70 mph in 3rd gear all day.

 

Read this guys thread. He has a 3rd gen and running stock tires with 4.88 gears. He does have a Bilstein 5100 lift but that’s about it. I would still go 4.88 stock on Automatic only. 2200 rpms at 70mph I can handle that.

Hmm, so with a OME 3" lift, ARB summit bumper/winch, slides, RTT and soon to be a rear swingout and some armor on 265/75/17 tyres, my cooper STT pro's measure out at 32.5" on the tyre or did when new would this be a good option? PLan is to go to a larger tyre here in the coming months and to the cab chop.

 

I'm thinking that it is needed on my truck as my fuel mileage is dismal. The tyres alone I lost 2-3l/100km, which when you bought the truck and you were averaing 10-11l/100km is a huge increase. I'm currently sitting at 15-16l/100km on the hwy and on the job site with lots of idling and crawling around through mud/etc, I am averaging 20l/100km. My chevy 3500 diesel trucks get better then this, granted a much larger engine.

 

Stock rear gearing in an AT is 3.90 and 4.30 in a MT. With stock tires you will see a 25% increase in RPM for any given speed for an AT and a 13.5% increase in RPM at any given speed for a MT.

 

I have 4.88’s in my truck and the best Mpg I’ve ever seen at 70mph is 14-15 mpg tops... maybe it’s the drag off my roof rack, but I don’t see it squeezing out an average of 3 mpg to get 18-19 mpg. Not me being at Sea level.

I also had nitro install my gears, but that’s a whole other story....

 

Yes, it would be the ideal option for you.

 

If you have the auto, you would still be at a lower rpm in 6th gear than a stock manual in sixth gear.

How much should one expect to have to pay to get this done on a RWD TRD off road? I'm planning my mods before I even get the truck

Anyone use the Mobile gear guy in SoCal? Just got my gears back from Weddle industies REM polishing. Ready to install just have to find the right place so between Unitrax or Mobile gear guy, just trying to find someone who has used either place Thanks!

Found a place in riverside 8 hours front and back 850$ out door. Hes on vacation for 2 more weeks im doing mine in 3 weeks there.

 

Who and where in riverside, i am adding rear locker also. How did you find this guy ? Does he have a good rep?

Ok, guys, need some input here. I have a 18' Offroad with an Icon stage 6, and 285/70-17's on it. It's a dog right now. Next week SDHQ is doing the 4.88's on it for me. Now I am concerned that my RPM's might be too high with the tires I have and might want to go up a size to 35's.

so here are the questions.

• Anyone running the 28570-17's with the 4.88? Whats your RPMs at say 75 or 80 mph.
• For those running 35's, I have the CMC done, can 35's rub with this lift of are they good to go? Any changes needed if I go up a size?

I daily drive it, and moderate offroad on weekends.

What would you do, stay at current size or swap for 35's? IF I go up in size I will have some Toys MT's with less than 500 miles on them for sale.

Well I have read through and unless I missed it, didn't see anyone that has posted with this tire size. I am guess that at highway speed they may be up around 2600 RPMs? No idea. I am sure most will chime in with run it first and see what you think then swap. But given SDHQ is going to be doing the hyper tech at the same time, and can swap tires I don't want to running back and forth across town a couple of times to get it resolved. Just want to make it all in one stop.

What are your RPM's at highway speeds and what size rubber are your running? What would you do in my situation?

 

Get the gears.
Your RPMs will be 2327 @80mph on 285 70r17

Sorry, I'm not trying to be an ass but if you own an 3rd gen and willing to spend 10-15 percent of vehicle purchase price percent on an upgrade like gears you're entitled to accurate information...

Gears for 2016+ trucks IMO are totally worth it AT or MT. You've been given the tools. I suggest you do your own math and make your own decisions.
