well, I am assuming that the wire in @EatSleepTacos wires running through the wall would only be rated for 15A (a 14 gauge wire). For a 20A breaker, you would want to have 12 gauge wire. The fire happens when the 14 gauge wire burns up from the higher loads, but the breaker doesn't trip because the higher load isn't high enough to trip the breaker.

It's best practice to verify the wire size running through the circuit. unfortunately I used to work for a guy who would run ONLY 12 gauge wire. The problem was that we were rehabbing old apartments and a lot of the existing wiring would stay, mostly being 14 gauge... I argued with him, and didn't last very long at that job. He was such a hack...

EDIT: I just reread your post @Kemosabe the last guy I worked for was a licensed and insured electrician and doing hack work. it's unfortunate that this kind of stuff is allowed. I can't find it in me to cut corners, but there is a TON on contractors that do. I fired a number of sub-contractors off my house flips over the past 2 years.

You need a little more heat and slow down a little bit. What size wire is in that little welder? You should have at least .030 for welding that thick of steel

I see I see! Around here it is mostly 12gauge wire, or 10 for higher amps. But I get it, if it is only 14 then it should be verified!
