Using the Spare Tire in the Rotation?

I have a 2006 Tacoma DC that is getting a Toytec ULK, Moto Metal 955's, and 285/70-17 Duratrac's this weekend. I'm thinking about buying an extra 955 wheel and tire and rotating the spare in each time I do a rotation. Anyone weigh in on this idea?

Don't waste the money. Unless you want to look good when you get a flat.

 

My reasoning was to have a spare that matches the height of the other tires and to get more mileage out of the set of tires.

but it's a good 3-5% shorter than the 285s, i can't imagine that will do your drivetrain any favors.

Personally I bought a properly sized spare tire.

a rotation these days is usually front to rear, rear to front.. no side to side crap, so really would a spare put into the rotation on ONE side be worth it to buy the extra 955?

Im going to get a used tire from discount when I get my 265/75's They should be pretty cheap, plus I can sell my never used spare.

 

yep, in the old days you could do a 5 tire rotate. Not with today's steel belts, you don't.

 

And I don't know that you would get an extra 10k either. It certainly wouldn't be worth it for any less. If anyone has any experience doing this, maybe they can give us an idea of how much additional mileage you could expect?

 

I would. Especially if you plan on buying a diffrent style of tire in the future.

To the OP question, if you have 50,000 mile rated tires then you can expect and additional 15,000 miles, stretching your total tire replacement to 65,000 miles. So, just do the math for how much you're paying for the tires/wheel and see it that's worth it.

For mine:

~$1,000 for 4/tires rated at 50,000 = 12,500 miles per tire
~$1,250 for 5/tires rated at 65,000 = 13,000 miles per tire

So, according to my setup, it's just about equal, won't save any more though I'm not spending any extra, except figuring for cost of tires going up by the replacement time.

 

That's like saying you can't wear a hat b/c your skull is made of fiberglass instead of bone...


Check your owner's manual, it explains a 4 as well as 5 tire rotation in there
