Been having this recently. Only happens once a day, difficult to reproduce but as I'm coming out of a parking lot and brake to a stop the RPM goes up for a second or two and the truck feels like it wants to get going without me and jerks a bit forward. What the he'l could this be?

This happens to me as well, but only when cold. I have an OR, so I attribute it to the power drawn by the electric brake booster or some shit. Idle goes up to about 1500 when on the brakes, drops back to about 1000 as soon as I take my foot off.

Same exact thing happens on my 18 sport, so I dont think its the off road brake booster. I think its just some weird quirk with the engine warm up process. It reminds me of an old carbed engine that idles up when you push the brake a bunch of times because of using all the engine vaccume.

    Auto trannies, I presume..!

Is it possible that you guys are experiencing the down-shift to 1st gear?? If so, and it happens ONLY when cold, then I'd say you are a bit low on tranny fluid and a fill would stop that...!!

Not to sound dense but this seems to be normal?

I'm just a bit skeptical of the whole "normal, working as intended" Toyota service tech meme but I trust other owners so I guess it's another one of many odd quirks?

If you asking is it normal for the 3rd gens to be low on tranny fluid, then you should check the low tranny threads.....

My opinion is this...yes, it seems to be normal...AND...Dealers will not check it because it takes a lot of time....and they are not willing to pay for the time....

I even asked my dealer to check it and if it's low YOU pay (Toyota will cover it)...if it's full...I'll pay...!! 1 provision was that I had to watch the process and ensure they did it right.... They refused to take that bet and they had NOTHING to lose....

Toyota would have paid them if it was low...if it was full I was paying....!

I went home and checked it myself.... 1 1/2 liters low....!! They DO NOT see my truck anymore.....!!

Ive had the same experience on my 2016 OR. Happens only every once in a while, only in winter on very cold days.
Typically occurs after cold startup while driving around a parking lot on the first stop. Ive noticed as soon as i get off the brake and reapply the brake problem is fixed. RPMS will be at 1500 then drop to 1000. Ive noted my defrost is also on when this occurs.
Thinking is a combination of the brake booster cold engine and defrost being on.

That may be a possibility; however, try it without the defroster on and full fan....

That would eliminate the alternator's demand for more power, wouldn't it....

If you can recreate this, do it without all the electrical demand and see what happens...... Then maybe you can diagnose it a bit further..!! (no seat heaters also)..hhehe

Do you notice increased steering effort just prior to the increase in RPM?

I was stopped behind another car, wheels straight when this happened.

The truck does rev high when turning the wheel but I've confirmed that's just how the power steering works. This is different because it happens at rest.

Torque converter clutch would be my next guess then.
The clutch itself, lock-up solenoids, programming, brake light switch, valve body...any number of reasons.
Sucks you can't reliably reproduce it.

I asked the dealership to check my tranny fluid and they said they did it using an electronic tool, and i had my truck back in an hour. Did they bullshit me?

The trans fluid needs to cool to below 95F before you can do the check at between 95-113F.
After a 5 mile drive, mine takes at least 4 hours to cool before I can check...so yeah, BS.

I felt like it was impossible. Thanks for clarifying.

I actually believe this has to do with the cleaning cycle the Atkinson engine does. There has been discussions of this before on here

The only feasible way to do it in 1 hour is if they used the extension tool for the pan; I doubt it though.
