    Hi Everyone,
I saved up for years to buy my 2013 Tacoma TRD (new bought brand new 2012) and after 10,000 miles or so, I noticed that there was a noticeable gap in the tailgate between the sidewalls. I notified Toyota about it and they didn’t seem concerned enough to help. It has grown larger and larger over the years. 1.5 years ago I installed these and it might have prevent a catastrophe (great product btw) http://www.chaosfab.com/2016-2017-Tacoma-Rear-Channel-Bed-Stiffeners-48676 but the gap has continued to grow. I now have weather stripping that barely covers the gap and I’m afraid it will expand beyond this. I do have a Leer contractor topper and only have a Thule ski box and light solar panel up top. I do not load it up. In other words, the bed should be plenty strong enough, but it isn’t.

My question to all of you is, have other people experienced this as well? I’d like for Toyota to know if there is a bigger issue out there and do something about it. Water gets in everywhere and I need to keep my things there. Not to mention, I haven’t been able to lock my topper for years because of this.

I’m almost thinking a custom welded bed box. Flatbed would be cool, but I have camping/fishing gear.

oh man, the things you can do with a flat bed are more then just leaving it as a flat bed. you would have to talk to some one who has done it, but the flat bed is just a starting point to something spectacular. @tacoma16 had this even worse then you, ill post a link to what happened to him, now he is going flat bed

Thanks for posting this thread Bocsy! So I’m not the only one... My fear is that I’d get a new bed and the same damn thing would happen again. Not sure what Toyota engineers were thinking (or just not) on this one.

no problem man haha I think tacoma16 priced out what he would need to get new OEM bed stuff like panels and what not and it wasn't much more to just go flat bed

So even with the bed stiffeners, beds are still eventually failing even due to 200lbs of fiberglass topper weight?

Well I could have fixed the bed in the cheap but the price of a new lighter cap setup and drawers wouldn’t. Flatbed worked lol

So this is before and after total chaos bed reinforcements

Then I was good until is got worst and the tailgate was having an issue closing. You can see my total chaos bed stiffeners in the corner.

On my cap I had a rtt and also a side tool box. I thought it was standard and not crazy.

    So flatbed
I went with this particular bed since they have a cap for it.

So is the metal beside separating from the plastic bed?

That Ute bed and topper looks like the ticket. Problem is I’m broke AF at the moment and need my original equipment to function. Thanks for sharing your images and experience.

I hear ya. I was able to sell my cab, bumper, some parts from my old bed to help pay for the bed. Now I am just waiting to buy the cap.

For me it was the bedside separating from this metal piece inside the bed (plastic/composite)

I have a cap but don’t have the spreading problem...yet. I get why toyota just shrugs when shown the problem. Caps are aftermarket accessories ya know. It’s disappointing that the bed can’t handle the weight but I don’t think any automaker would help you with problems caused by your decision to add something they didn’t manufacture. The blame should be placed on the company that produced a product that caused damage to your vehicle when used as intended. I got my cap used so I don’t know if ARE has a disclaimer about this kind of damage but they probably do. Now I have something new to worry about. Crap! Who wants a sweet cap?

You may consider changing you poll to.....If you use a topper.

Nevertheless, I'd suggest you go back to Toyota again or buy a bed from a junk yard and ditch the topper if that's the issue. There seems to be more than a topper causing this. Do you off road a good bit...
