Differences in 5100 shocks

So I’ve already decided on the 5100s and I’ll be ordering them sometime next week. Ordering through Amazon. Was just wondering if there were different model 5100s for say the TRD off road or the base model. Or are they universal for all 2nd gen trucks? Just wanted to check before spending the money.

 

There is a lot of different 5100s, but only one for your truck.

 

They are model specific to Tacoma’s but not by trim level. Just get ones for a 6 lug 05-15 tacoma and you’ll be good.

Keep this in mind....

Trd offroad has progressive coils unlike the sport and non trd models.

Setting the 5100s to 2.5" may ride very rough, its possible that 1.75 might be too rough for some even.

I cant say how much worse, i used lift coils (toytec/eibach). And put those on 5100s set at zero lift. This meant the coils did all the lifting.

 

This is probably the safest option. The coils are designed to carry the weight - not the shocks.

Take it for what its worth, but 1.75in setting +1/4in lean spacer on the driver side with 5100's and OEM TRD OR coils on my truck and while it rides firmer than stock its much better than original boat like ride. Though no way id want to go all the way up as it would likely be way stiff and jarring.

Hard to complain. Money is tight (damn truck) but I'm getting by. LOL

Noisy.

Although I'm really suspecting it's the front end making the noise. Seems like when I put her in 4H or crappy roads the noise goes away.

Can't be a needle bearing though because I have an ARB locker - which means no Toyota Needle Bearing. CV boots and all look good. So I have no idea. Don't have money to pay someone to chase it either.

Depending on the amount you lift the truck and the travel there are 2 different choices for the rear. I went with the longer option because of the amount of my lift. The longer version is roughly a 12" shock and the standard is just under 10" I believe. Here is the part # for the rear longer travel ones F4-BE5-B110-T5.

Also instead of giving your $$$ to Amazon or one of their vendors check out some of the TW vendors. I went that route just because they are very much supportive if you need them. I ordered from wheelers, Toytec, and Headstrong Offroad. Bonus for Headstrong is they off free shipping on everything pretty much in the CONUS.

 

Does the shock bottom out 1st, or does the stock bumpstop still do its job?

 

I don't have stock bumps. I am running Wheeler's U-bolt flip kit with their super bumps. My axle will contact the bump before the shock bottoms out. Even with the shorter shock though if you lift the truck you will need a spacer or taller bumpstop to prevent the shock from bottoming out.

Here is a couple pics of mine almost flexed out. 1st pic the shock still have some droop left, 2nd pic I am on the bump stop and compressing it a little. I can't get much more flex out of my set up because I am running deaver U402 Expedition springs rated @ 700#+

That said... i have literally had over a ton in the bed with standard 5100s, icon aal and superbumps.
I never felt the shocks bottom out.

I have had the longer 5100s bottom out with maybe 150lbs of weight in the bed ON ROAD, due to a comically small rut in the road. The droop is phenomenal with the longer 5100s but u shouldnt tell someone to slap em on and forget the other info. I got a deal on em and tried... it wasnt worth it to me to lose that much realworld travel.
It rode like butter over most areas, but any added load and the usable travel went out the window without further modifications.
