Mounting amp to double cab floor

I've seen many builds where people are putting smaller amps under the drivers and passenger side seats.

How are these getting mounted in place?

I'm not real keen on drilling screws through the floor, and does anyone offhand know roughly what sizes will and won't work?

I saw an Alpine PDX install where the owner used sections of wood dowel to elevate the amp so the rear foot heater vents weren't covered.

I assume you mean measuring tape. I didn't mean what size amp fits under the seat, I was inquiring about the screw length people were using to mount amps to the floor. Unless the floor is double walled, I can't see doing this route.

 

There are some brake lines or something underneath that area so be a little careful. If you measure it you should be totally fine. I used a self drilling/tapping screw to first bolt down a mounting board that was 1/8". It helped squish the padding and sound deadening goodies I had under there. It helped give me a flat mounting surface too!

 

Another option is to cut a piece of 1/2" mdf, plywood, whatever, to fit the area under the seat. Slip it under the carpet, so it sits between the floor of the truck and the carpet. Now sit your amp on the carpet where you want, and screw it down. You essentially sandwhich the truck carpet between the amp and mdf board.

Amp won't move this way, and also provides another flat mounting surface. I did this method after a recommendation from Mr. Marv, worked great in my install.

Great idea! I'm just no so hot about drilling holes through the bottom of the truck, but don't want all my amps eating up the back wall storage. My sub is eating up enough of that as it is!

 

Yeah, I wasn't keen on drilling holes in my floor either, which is why Marv suggested that method.

I'm sure drilling holes in the floor is fine if your careful, seal them up, etc. But I just found the method I used best for me. YMMV.

 

He wheeled the shit out of his truck! Not going to do that with my PreRunner anytime soon. That's what the old 88' Runner was for!

 

Yeah, I'm working with pretty small amps as it is- an RF Punch P400-4 and an Alpine MRP-M450. One under each seat will fit very easily. Still kicking around the idea of taking the Punch back and getting the newer RF Power T400-4 as I like the steeper crossover.

 

I like the plywood idea.

 

It's not a boat. If you park it in a lake, water will get in whether you've poked holes in the floor or not. I screwed my amp and crossovers into the floor and siliconed the hell out of the screws underneath. I don't wheel that hard, so I'm fine with it. I mounted my components on a sheet of 1/4" mdf to clear the heater vents. The screws go right through the elevating tubes.

why mount them at all?

I drilled one screw then said screw it haha

mine are not mounted and do not slide or move at all. The floor mats hold them in their respective places fairly well

one thing I hate is the passenger side seat has a steel bar on the underside rear of it which sometimes scrapes the top of the amp

You can flip the bar around, I did. Kind of a PITA if I remember, but worth it now for all the usable room under there. I could camp out under that passenger seat.

 

This is how I mount stuff under my seat...go get some 2" velcro and put the strips lengthwise on the bottom of the amp, just the velcro part that sticks to stuff, then just place it on the carpet, I have the boss 1200 held down like this and I have to take the seat off to move it. Italyn has tried to move this sub so he knows how solid it stays.

 

Is that your fuse holder right next to the amp? you should wire that much closer to the battery.

 

I've got another one right next to the battery, don't worry. That one's just extra b/c the amp is not internally fused.

Probably don't need it, but better safe than sorry.
