It takes a 24" long piece of wood.

Nice. My parents heat with a 70's vintage Vermont Castings Defiant that my dad bought brand new. I keep trying to get them to upgrade to something more modern and efficient but they keep using it. For the 70's it was a very modern, efficient stove, but it's got nothing on the newer models in terms of efficiency. He's 66 now, though, so maybe as he gets a little older he'll see the appeal of cutting and splitting less wood every year

I do not see the upgrade as less wood.

Are you looking at it as more heat instead?

No, I have to seal the joints every few years, more sometimes when I screw up. I have to crawl, my head and shoulders, into the stove and seal the joints. I just see that as unnecessary with the welded steel stove. I am no longer young. I like wood heat.

(Disclaimer: Does not everyone seal the joints of their wood stoves?)

I resealed mine this year, but it was more because I had to take it apart to replace the insulation/fiberboard that goes over the reburn tubes. Somebody had replaced the original board with plate steel at some point and it had warped, so I took the stove apart and replaced the parts and had to reseal it when I put it back together. But the other joints are original and the stove's about 20. But as near as I can tell there's no air leaks from any of them, so I haven't bothered. Soapstone with a cast iron frame from Hearthstone.

Edit- I'm surprised you have to reseal yours that often, though. My Parents resealed theirs in the very early 2000's (I was still in high school and I graduated in '03) and theirs is still leak-free after 15+ years at 6-8 cord/year. :notsure:

I bought mine about 8 years ago, used of course, and it was together. I have pondered the thought that the travel in a trailer had jostled the seal.
And also thought this winter if I should take it apart and reseal it as I reassemble it.

Is that a masonry fireplace, or Ye Olde Straight Pipe style?

It's a Squire insert into a brick fireplace. The other room has an open fireplace. We got really lucky finding a house in our area with real fireplaces. Most are just gas on/off.

I keep a small reserve of "pitch bomb" logs for extra cold mornings when I need to get the stove hot as quickly as possible. I try not to use them too often to avoid fouling the chimney.
