Searched and searched, and can’t seem to find a definitive answer on this (even in the Rustproofing consolidation thread)…..I have the Krown Coating treatment on my truck, but I don’t know if I should get the underbody spray wash when I’m at a drive-through car wash.

I’ve read where some Krown / Fluid Film / oil-based treatment users say nope, don’t do the underbody wash (including the shop that actually put on the Krown coating for me). Some say use yep, for sure either have the car wash do it or use a pressure washer yourself. Others say just run a gentle sprinkler / garden hose under the truck so as not to mess with the coating. A whole bunch of “this is what I do” out there, but not enough to make me feel solid about any one game plan.

I even checked the FAQs on Krown’s website - no mention of washing other than “After your vehicle is sprayed with Krown at one of our locations, your vehicle receives a wash. We are cleaning the excess product off of the windows and painted surfaces where the product is not active. The rust inhibitor itself cannot be removed from the metal with soap and water.”

So there’s my conundrum - Krown makes it sound like an underbody wash won’t hurt, but my gut is telling me to NOT get the high pressure underbody wash at a car wash, and get under the truck with a gentle garden hose on days where it warms up (not a whole lot of those in Minneapolis this time of year haha).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks for the help.

well, i look at it this way. I paid someone to spray stuff on the bottom of my truck to help protect it, why would I pay someone to spray my truck with something that may wash it off? I will wash the underside of my truck once all the sand and salt has been washed off the roads this spring, I figure the 3 or 4 good rain storm should do it.

I had my truck sprayed for the first time this year (just bought it). I don't plan on washing the underneath until the salt is done. A friend of mine has a 06 Silverado, 4.8manual that he does not want to part with. Since it is impossible to purchase a new full size half ton with a manual, he wants to hold on to it as long as possible. He has been doing the Krown for 6-7 years and his frame looks sooooo much than my 06 that just traded in for my Tacoma. His Silverado has spent its entire life here in upstate NY. I purchased my Silverado used from southern PA, still salt but I believe less than what we typically get here in upstate NY.

With the holes already drilled from the Krown app, I may pop out the gromments and apply more Krown in the spring. Good luck!

I use Fluid Film and do gentle underside washing, but I do a complete coating at least once in the fall and sometimes a mid-winter touch up. I do a good wash in the spring, not really looking to wash off the Fluid Film as such but to clean up the leaves, gravel, small game that gets stuck in it. I have no idea what the "right" answer is, though.

his frame looks soooo much WHAT haha? Better? Worse?

I'm originally from SE PA, and let me tell you, there's plenty of salt haha.

I also plan to do the Krown coating annually

I have a feeling this is what I'll end up doing - in addition to getting the Krown treatment every year. Keeping an eye on it more than anything else

I fluid film twice a year once before winter (heavier coat) and once in the spring to touch up any areas that I might have sprayed off with a pressure washer since I spray the underbody when I wash my truck in the winter at home.

I wouldn't worry about it coming off (it held up well on my truck over the first year), but I also wouldn't attempt to wash it off ... just a personal preference.

I've done a mod or two
Why not just call Krown support line, they're pretty active in their PR and support departments.

I purchased my last truck (06 Silverado) in 2011 near Philly (Reed-Tollman). 98k, frame and hitch were still black like it comes from factory, I was shocked how nice it was. Second winter I could see the rust on the frame and hitch. After last winter, I noticed a few bubbles on bed wheel well and near the gas fill...and I knew it was time to send it down the road. My co-workers 06 looks very nice. He doesn't have any of the issues I was starting to see. I did recently see his frame and I was amazed. The Krown treatment does work in my opinion. I think the SE area, heck even middle PA gets less salt than we do in upstate NY! Bought a car for wife once from NJ (hour from Philly), body was MINT. Son bought same model car, less miles but from Rochester 2 years later that showed rust within 2 years of owning it. That's just my opinion...don't take it as "truth". I'd never buy a vehicle with 60-80k from Buffalo, Rochester, or Syracuse. They get crazy salt.

left Krown a voicemail and an email, we'll see if they get back to me

I also called Line-X in PA that coated my truck just to chat again, and their opinion was the same as what they originally told me - don't wash the underside of the truck at all noting that sometimes those car washes use a degreaser in addition to water (which can strip the coating). They specifically said the only vehicles they've seen where Krown didn't seem to be working were on a few large plow trucks that ran through an underbody wash several times after each outing - the high pressure washed away the Krown coating. I asked about using a hose or sprinkler and the said it wasn't really necessary because the Krown coating isn't affected by anything that's stuck on there. It's doing its job by blocking all the salt and crap from the road and by pulling water away from the metal.

So now i'm feeling better about not washing the underside at all!

If I paid to have the underbody coated i would do what they say. I only power wash mine because it costs me 30 dollars twice a year for peace of mind

I live in west central PA coal country. The old guys who used to work at the strip mines would spray the underside of their trucks with used motor oil and then drive over dry, dusty dirt roads to coat the under carriage. They thought it worked pretty good to inhibit rust. Just saying.
