My friend was attempting a hill climb and as he slid backwards, clipped a tree, and the drivers side pulled apart. He got pissed and tried to push it back on the same tree and it ended up like this.

Before we left for the day he was saying he was probably going to cut the wings off the bumper, plate the sides and add tubing around the corners.

Doesn't look like much reinforcement on those wings. Was it aluminum?

Nope, it's steel. I didn't look that close, but it looks like there wasn't much penetration.

I'm interested in @Pelfreybilt comment on this. Not sure these bumpers are designed to withstand force from the opposite direction, i.e., sliding backwards and getting caught on an immovable object like a tree. Anyhow, in for any reply or further information. I'm assuming your friend is on TW if he has Pelfreybilt product on his truck, is he going to comment?

That was some douchebag that rolled off the trail on his first trip in his Jeep liberty after drinking all day and not knowing where he was and what he was doing.

Any chance of uploading the images to TW rather than hosting them? Looks like that hosting site is blocked here at work and I really want to see the pics.

    Workin' on it....
Wow. I mean I guess if the truck is sliding backwards down a hill you've got 3600lbs pulling back on the bumper that probably wasn't gusseted / reinforced to withstand the forces in that direction. Still, my first thought was that must be aluminum but kinda surprised that even the steel bumper deformed that much.

If the top plate was one piece it would have faired a lot better. They make some nice stuff, that's for sure, but nice and built to take a beating don't always go together.

I'm sure most of their bumpers will never get used like this guy uses them.

Demello is an 1/8” skin with 3/16” bracing allowing it to be lighter at 120 lbs yet strong. I’ve bumped mine into a few trees and rocks and it’s help up fine so far, but no idea if it’d hold up to getting yanked backwards on a tree.

    Odds and Ends
I am really sorry to see this happened. I don't believe there was much that anyone could have done here to avoid some carnage. There are so many variables that can come into play. We as manufacturers try our best to send everyone out on the trail as prepared as possible and with the confidence to come home safely. I'm glad to see that at least everyone made it home safe, that's job #1
We do build our bumpers with a mixture of light weight and strength so that we can do our best to appeal to all needs. There are some folks that need a much heavier construction than others, we try to cover as many folks as we can with a well designed bumper that's strong enough for nearly everything you can throw at it. At the end of the day these things can happen and a bumper, much like all truck parts is a potential wear item when used off road.
