hello! new guy here looking into buying my first Taco ('05 XCab V6 90K)

i know the timing belt is just about due but is there any thing in particular i should look out for?

i test drove it today and noticed a shimmy in the steering wheel at highway speed. i drove the same stretch of road in my car and got no movement in the wheel at all. IDK, dealer says the tires are probably out of round from sitting.

 

try an allignment if not its normal lol, might wanna do a tune u, Good luck on your purchase and Welcome to TW.

 

over all the truck ran really good and had plenty of get up and go. not quite what i expected from 245hp/tq but good enough for what i need to do.

what kind of mileage is typical for the 4.0L? msn autos claims 17/21

 

welcome to tw!!!! you have a timing chain......no need to worry about it now. also, you may need the tires roadforce balanced, it may take care of the shimmy.

 

are you sure the '05 has a chain? when did they switch? my friends '02 definatly has a belt

yep....im sure. the v6 has the chain, the 4 banger may have a chain also. they changed in o5......my 04 has a timing belt.

other than a tune up is there any else i should look into or look out for?

 

if i were you.......since you are closer to 100k miles, i would drain and refill my diff(s), get the dealership to flush the transmission fluid(if you have an auto), and do a cooling system flush, then that and a tune up, you should be good to go. the tranny and cooling system dont have to be done until 100k, but since you are that close, might as well go ahead and do it while you are at it. its up to you though.

As for your question, Im unsure other then maybe cleaning out the throttle body. Just hang on though I'm sure someone else more qualified to answer your question rather then myself will be sure to chime in soon.

yep....good idea to clean out the throttle body and maybe seafoam the motor too. get everything cleaned out.

the only service manual are the online ones(no haynes or chiltons), but you can download it here. toyota wants too damn much for their service manuals. here is the one for the 05 and up tacomas.......
