2nd gen fuel pump troubles

Do you let your fuel levels get below 1/4 tank often? That will kill fuel pumps.

 

Based OP's diagnosis, the fault was further upstream.

One way to rule out the pump at this stage is to pull out the relay and manually jumper 12V to the pump, and confirm it runs.

 

I'm not sure about our Tacomas..... but I do know alot of fuel pumps work better worth more in the tank.....the full submerge helps lubricate parts and keeps the pump cooler....probably not a bad idea to never let it get below 1/4 a tank anyway... that way of you get that emergency call to go meet your family at the hospital you know you got plenty of gas to get there!

First time poster here.

I’m having this same issue, unfortunately, I swapped the pump, swapped the relay and I got nothing. I took it to a mechanic to diagnose and the fuel pump was his evaluation. Couldn’t afford the $1100 bill he was suggesting so I did work with a buddy.

The trouble started about a month and a half ago. I was out of town and it died while I was driving on the highway. Pulled to the side and thought it was the batter or out of gas. So we put two gallons in and jumped it. Nothing. Kept jumping it and threw it in neutral and it fired right up.
Went to the gas station filled up and I couldn’t get it to start back up.
It stayed in Dallas for a month with my mom and stepdad. They replaced the battery and it fired right up. They drove around for a while took it to a mechanic and everything seemed good. They drove it back to Houston for me and I drove around town for two days then shut it off at work and couldn’t get it back on.

And now we’re back at the beginning of this story. New fuel pump, new relay and I got nothing.

Do y’all have any suggestions, where I can go from here?

 

Are you replacing just the pump or the sending unit also? Sounds like your sending unit is bad.

 

Does it make fuel pressure?

 

I replaced the whole assembly.

It’s strange, when I first replaced it and checked tons of fuel. Checked again, after trying to start up the car for a while and there was no fuel at all.

 

Try number two. Pulled the tank off again. Checked power and tried listening for the pump to kick on. Bought a used pump that was tested and still nothing.
Read in another thread someone having the same issue but no one had an outcome.

I checked the voltage on the wiring going into the pump. The sensor for fuel level gets about 11.4 v. The other side which I’m assuming is to power the pump gets 0v with the key turned to ACC, when we crank it the most I’ve gotten is 1.7v. I’m assuming that I should be seeing 12v to power the pump.

anyone seen this before and know what the problem may be?

 

have you bypassed the fuel pump resistor? or plugged the pump directly into 12v?

 

I have plugged the pump directly to 12 v. Works great.
I’ve been trying to find the location of the resistor without much luck.
Unfortunately, I’m a total amateur at repairs and am going off of diagrams and anything I can find on the Internet.

resistor is right up front behind the passenger headlight.

What I would do is one of two things, pull the resistor off of the harness and jump the two pins on the harness side so that there is no resistor in the fuel pump resistor circuit. OR, pull the fuel pump relay and jump pins 3 and 4 which will feed 12v fuel to the pump directly and bypass the resistor circuit.

 

So I had something very similar happen to my truck. Went to the store shut it off came back out and nothing, turned over but no start. Tried again in about 10 mins fired right up. Happened again a week later, went to the store and came out and nothing, had to have it towed in. Bad fuel pump was determined to be the cause replaced under warranty and all was good. Two weeks later went to start up first thing and nothing, would not start. Tried hitting the gas tank with rubber mallet and all, nothing. Another tow back to the dealer. This time took them a couple days but the found a burnt pin 8 in IB1 connector in the wiring harness to the fuel pump. Heres a pic of the invoice maybe it will help. Good luck.

 

I did and still nothing. Work is crazy this week so I had to button everything back up and had it towed over to my local dealer.

 

They just called and said I have a burnt wire. 300 to splice it or 2500 to replace the whole harness. I guess it’s burnt out under the dash.

I’m just glad I’ll have my truck back soon. Something under the dash is something I would have never thought to check.

Banging on or kicking the gas tank works at times, did for me in another truck. A tow truck driver told me to try it to get off the road in the fast lane. I sat down and kicked away. Drove it for 2 days until I replaced the fuel pump.
