Seems unusual to rust that quick. I live in CT and travel upstate a couple times a month along with the rest of new england. 100k miles on my 2014 and no rust. I fluid film the shit out of it every year.

    Good luck

Them not fixing it is pure laziness. I worked for a Toyota dealer and had almost exactly the same thing covered under warranty. All the service manager has to do is take a few pics, send it in for approval and that’s it. Once our body shop fixed it, they told me it wasn’t the metal of the truck, just some debris that got caught under the paint while they were painting. Looked exactly the same as yours.

Try this.... Wait for a nice sunny Saturday when people are shopping for toyotas at your dealership and park right at the entrance with a big sign pointing out the rust flaw and lack of warranty ownership to every potential buyer pulling in the driveway. I think they will get the message, and if they don't do it on Sunday too!

Aluminum only oxidizes just a bit and by the reaction to oxygen on its surface seals itself off to further corrosion- unless it cracks and opens up fresh surfaces.

The entire body is Aluminum, they experimented on the bed for a few years prior to doing the entire thing. Naturally the Frame and Axles are still made of Steel.

Aluminum will disintegrate, it's really no better than steel. I've seen a 3 year old f150 when just the hoods were aluminum have bad corrosion where the good met the grille. Talk to any body shop, sand/media blast aluminum (thin at that) and it basically disappears.

For the o.p that rust is total bull shit, I live on the north east coast of Canada, and my 2016 4runner doesn't have any rust, and its white, you'd see it if it was there. Demand it to be properly fixed

I live in Central PA, and get up to the Rochester/Buffalo area a couple times a month.

We get a lot of salt on the roads here, but I always thought in NY rust was a dealer-added value on every new car.

Agree, a lot of manufacturers are going aluminum, 2019 Silverado has aluminum hood, doors and tailgate.

OP, I live in Rochester as well. Pretty rough conditions up here but you should definitely get some satisfaction, starting with your dealer. Just curious, which Toyota dealer? They're all pretty good, but a couple stand out as really customer oriented. My truck is just 2 weeks old but I think your situation just convinced me to invest in some type of rust proofing. Wanted to get a ceramic coating. Wonder if that will do it...

Yes! In my 2nd winter in Milwaukee, zero rust. But I do give it the fluid film bath every year. But that is more for the underside. That's bad prep, hopefully the dealer stands behind their product.

To the OP, you say you got it rust proofed. With what product??? And by whom??? Did that come with a separate warranty?
I'm picking up a brand spanking new 2018 wednesday....and I live in the rust belt.

    Watching with interest.

That whole rocker panel needs to be replaced. Probably has a good amount of salt and water that’s mixed in there and only going to get worse.

Totally unacceptable Toyota. I have more rust in my 2016 Tacoma than my 2004 S2000 and 2010 TSX combined.

Rust on the bed, under the hood, frame, in paint chips, etc. and I live in Florida with zero road salt.
