255/80/r17s pizza cutter thread

I drove mine quite a bit 130 miles round trip commute. I was able to just start carpooling but they did great MT and all. They've been great tires all around for me. Good in snow, rain, good conditions and the little bit of off roading I've been able to do so far.

 

So how is the 255/80/17 size E load better than the 255/75/70 size that gives you more tire selection and can be found in C load?

Not trying to crap on this thread but trying to see why so much better?

 

Sorry, I've read through this discussion and totally agree with the aspect of folks getting what works best for them. You asked for some real world info and I may be able to offer a little. No statistics or numbers or anything specific. I've had these tires on both my trucks. I statred with a 4cyl '13 AC AT. I originally had 285's on it P rated tires and it did fine they only drug it down a little. I was very sckeptical switching to the 255's for a couple of reasons but chiefly the weight especially with the 4cyl. I was pleasantly suprised to find they actually effected the trucks performance less and I couldn't understand why so did a little digging to figure out it was the decrease in size of the actual contact patch of the tire with the surface. Heavy? You betcha each of mine are 87lbs with the wheel of course, but they don't feel that way. I liked them so much when I switched up to the '15 4.0 I had them switched over to it. No, I didn't switch up to the 4.0 because the 2.7 couldn't handle the load quite the contrary it did wonderfully, for me, right up until I put a small camper behind it and tokk it over the mtns to Luray to camp. It wasn't pretty the truck just didn't want to tow well.
I really didn't mean to but in but I've been nothing but pleased with this size tire so far.

Honestly, I can't answer that as I've never had the 255/75's but I doubt there is a substantial weight difference. I never saw a huge difference in weight until I got to like a p rated tire when I was shopping for them. This is considering like sizes sadly I don't believe the 255/80's are available in anything but E ratings

 

Like you said earlier, you spent very little time in your decision process. Truck looks good though.

Good info for the skinny tire crowd and it provides a few options if you don't need the extra 1/2 inch of sidewall or not interested in doing a regear due to the power loss of the heavier tire with a 255/80 or 85 aspect ratio.

 

That's a pretty nifty thread. I'm pretty well armored with the 255/80/17's and pull a micro camper. I've had no noticeable power loss and no need for a regear.
On a side note I see your in Va. I'm in Culpeper what area are you in? Always nice to find fellow Virginians on here

 

Hampton Roads but spend a bit of time in the Richmond area and down to the OBX in the summer. I'm either running the hills in the winter or beaches in the summer on the weekends.

 

Yep I'm on the west side of Culpeper in the foothills the mtns are about a 15 minute drive away. We go to OBX every year hell I wish I could move down there.

 

Me too until hurricane season floods the place.



I'm out of the flood plain in HR and about 45 mins from Nags Head. It works for me.

Nice thread! I'm currently on 265 75r16 generals X3s and NEED to fill my fender wells big time. I went with the smaller tire to keep towing performance up but ended up re-gearing anyway so now time for bigger meats!

Does anybody have experience with both the ST Maxx and BFG KM2 in 255 85r16? I've read the KM2 is actually about a half inch taller and actually a little bit lighter but lacks some durability in comparison. I'm really curious on the part if anybody can chime in.

I'll be installing these this week if you are still looking for opinions. I found your post by searching "toyo" so I haven't read from your post on, not sure where the conversation went. Selected because they are .3" taller than the maxx, and 9 lbs lighter.

 

Yes I’m very interested to hear how you like them. I loved my STMaxx, but I didn’t love their weight.

You didn’t miss much regarding the thread. It got derailed for a pissing match for a short time. Such is life in the 3rd gen forum.

 

Ran maxx for years in 285 could literally feel the added resistance when accelerating from a stop. Guess I was on the 285 border of needing a regear. Hoping these toyos don't ding my mpgs/power too bad, I am adding 8lbs a corner, but narrowing the contact patch. We will see.

 

Your 285 STMaxx where 42lbs?

 

No that's my old 07, my 15 has 42lb at in 265.65.17

Does anyone in here have information on what 17” rims will work with 255/80/17 size tires. From what I have been reading the 4 runner Sema pros will work. Curious to see if there are other choices or what spec rims I would have to look out for. Also on stock suspension for a 16 TRD sport.
