What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I love it down there, lots of cool stores and junkyards but I'm not sure I'd ever get any auto work done there. I haven't heard anything about Scottsdale muffler, probably good if they have a pipe bender on site (some places only have pre bent pipe and that doesn't come out so nice). Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll notice if you have any holes in evap or fuel return lines. Possible to get a fuel smell if the fuel regulator fails too.

 

Going to do the headliner and floor, but didn't get any mass loaded vinyl. Got two packs of this:

and a roll of their closed cell foam. Looks nearly identical to the raamaudio stuff and quite a bit cheaper.

Will report back on the exhaust after I get to listen to more than moving the truck from the garage to the backyard. Seems like it will have a little noise when you get on it, but very quiet the rest of the time, guessing I'll be really happy.

That being said, after spending $150 on the muffler, and then $70 on the resonator, don't know why I didn't just leave the stock muffler on...

That's a Sparco R100. I had to weld the stock feet onto a Sparco bracket to get it to work. IIRC, Corbeau makes brackets for the 1st gen if you want bolt in.

 

Yeah that would be really tough with anything but a rolling hotdog stand haha. I'm pretty decent at backing trailers and I wouldn't want anything to do with one on a shelf road like that.

 

Looks clean. I have a collection of engine harnesses and body harnesses that have been warrantied that I'm slowly getting made into harnesses for stuff I'm adding... talk about a chore, you sir are patient

 

It is indeed is a chore. My first harness took six months, this one took probably a weekend.

 

Looks really professional though, where are you getting the Toyota connectors and terminal pieces. I'll have quite a bit of repinning and splicing to do here soon so it would be nice to have the tools and pins on hand.

 

I actually just use the kick panel pigtail and original Toyota door harness to work with. I went through a whole thing with @mechanicjon to find the manufacturer of the connector and the pins, and he went all the way to contact the Toyota OES to source some. Unfortunately Toyota stopped using the IH/IL kick panel connectors in 2015 at the end of the 2nd generation, the 3rd generation used completely different connectors.

Toyota wants like, $5 per PIN! Yes you read that right. At almost 60 pins total for both sides it wasn't feasible.

 

Not sure if this matters to you (it didn't for me for quite a while), but my 1016 USB charger created a lot of radio frequency interference (RFI) - enough to make my Ham radio not work well. Ended up replacing it with a 1045 from Blue Sea to completely solve the problem. Wrote it up here if you want details: Mod wars - USB charger RFI vs. Ham Radio

 

you managed to find the bare pins? i believe ive found similar ones but im not sure.. this would work much better than me buying pigtails or finding ones in a harness.

 

Wow, that stuff is a lot cheaper. Should do the trick just fine too. Don't know how effective it will be on your floor (if you're planning on putting it there?) as a sound deadener but it should certainly help with insulation. But it should work great on the rear wall, rear quarter panels, roof and doors.

Just remember to only put a 8x8", at most, piece of the closed cell foam behind each speaker. Any more and you'll dampen the back wave too much and make the mid range and bass sound really flat.

Because.... mods.

 

Pro muffler in Peoria installed mine for 40 bucks if I remember correctly. I brought them the muffler. My buddy gave me a magnaflow. I didn’t have access to a welder at the time.

Would it make enough RFI to interfere with my radio or even CB radio? Also, I plan on putting this one in the bed of my truck on it’s own separate power supply line, do you think that would help?? Thanks for thinking about that!

Truthfully, I don’t really plan on going HAM radio for QUITE awhile!

Unless you all convince me like you guys do for everything else....

How I DE compressed 2nd gen shock/strut, & I don't want to hear a lot of bullshit over it, it was safe, probably shouldn't even post it haha.

My dad added similar resonator to his exhaust after he did all the headers and URD crossover on his to quiet it down. Helped....for about 6 months. Then it did nothing really.

Pretty sure that 2nd gen coils is a terrible idea. I think you'll end up breaking a coil as the block height on them will be too tall.

 

It definitely makes enough RFI to mess with CB - when I was using it, I had to turn the squelch way up (which I thought was normal until I got the 1045). There were times where I couldn't hear others (b/c the squelch was up) but just figured it was the terrain.

If you're going to have it switched in the bed though, and only use it when you aren't using the CB, you might be OK -- it only generates RFI when it actively has a device charging from it. When it's just "on" and nothing's charging, it doesn't generate any RFI.

 

Oh good, I do not plan on using while using the CB. I just want to be able to charge some things at night when we are sleeping! But I’ll order a 1045 for in the cab charging! Thank you!

Yep... That'd be a big bag of "f'n nopes" for me right there. No way I'd want to be draggin a trailer and come upon that.

 

only seen one truck run those with a custom built center mounted diff.

They are super strong. Your front diff will blow up probably before they do.

could swap to tundra outers i think with some tinkering. The outer cage on those is way stronger.
