Hey I'm new to this site anyway I just purchased a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Double cab 3.4L I was wondering if you could possibly help me with some info on possible causes of rear differential lock not engaging the light just blinks when I push the button to engage the locker also do you happen to know where I could get a PDF copy of a repair manual for my truck Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I’m looking for the location of the body control module for a 2003 Tacoma Prerunner 3.4L

How much difference do you find in the 03 fsm vs working on earlier year trucks?

 

I use it all the time for my two 1998's. Only major differences I know of are some of the wire colors and some minor tweaks.

 

That's good to know. I know the 03 has diagnostics for both throttle body types which is the largest difference I've found.

 

I even have the Paper edition of my 1998 service manual but I use the 2003 one way more simply because it's easier to navigate, plus it's indexed. Even the wiring diagrams are mostly the same, just some of the pinouts and wire colors changed over the years.

 

Yep, have the $$$ multi-book fsm also. Having it on my phone & computer is pretty much indispensable.

 

I don't even touch the paper manuals anymore. For things that mostly remain the same, like torque specs, I use my the '03 indexed PDF on my laptop.

 

Too bad they haven't stickied the 2nd Gen Tacoma FSMs that are available.

2003 FSM good for 2001 3.4 4x4 DC?

 

No. The 2003/2004 5VZ v6 has the ETCS-I electronic throttle system, 1995-2002 have a mechanical cable driven throttle. The valve body and the throttle body at least will be different.

That website received a copyright infringement/takedown notice so you won't be able to find up-to-date FSM links. If you're doing any engine work than involves the throttle system then it will be different.

Every year something changed, especially the pinouts on the ECU and other computer components in some cases. If you're doing something basic than never changed over the generation like a water pump, head gasket, etc. then any year FSM will be fine. It's entirely up to what you're doing to determine if you need your specific year FSM or not. Most of the time the answer is no, you don't need the year specific FSM.

 

For now I'm just looking for torque specs of drain/fill/transmission pan bolts so the 2003 should be fine? I'll attempt to track down a 2001 at some point I guess.

 

Absolutely it'll be fine. Stuff like torque specs didn't change (for the most part). When you get into wiring schematics, vacuum line routing, emissions control, and other specifics that changed over the years is where you run into trouble.
