Ehg...copernicus over here wasnt paying attention and picked up 5 quarts of high mileage mobile1 instead of regular. It was on the regular rack...
Finished up and realized the empty jug wasnt regular...

So apparently there's massive controversy on here dating back to the rennaisance over whether or not HM swells seals causing you to have to stay with high mileage oil or else they shrink back down and all hell breaks loose causing a leak. If thats the case too late now...still cant find a thread where somebody put regular in after using HM, started leaking then returned to HM and the leak stopped.
    I...did not know this was a thing...seriously?

Sounds half legit, half tacoma urban legend. whats the deal here?

If youve been using synthetic, a high mileage synthetic will not hurt one bit.
Dont pay attention to the bullshitters.

Call Mobil/Exxon, I'm sure there's a number on the bottle and see what the manufacturer says instead of the half will and half won't hurt replys here.Straight from the horses mouth.

Yeah I did this once, didn’t even occur to me that any issues would result. Synthetic is synthetic.

Just one big marketing ploy, and fear mothering.

How do you all breakeven doing your own oil changes. When I add up the price of oil, filter and having to run oil to be disposed it does not seem worth it.

When there are coupons and specials it seems to make sense.

My thought is....You will know it is done properly is the best reason?

Mobil 1 has annual rebates which brings the cost of 5qt jug down to $11. Oem filter from Toyota can be bought for $4. Dispose of used oil at autozone is free.

I believe synthetic oil changes cost about $50 at the dealer, and around $40 elsewhere

Definitely because I want to know it's done right. And gives you a sense of ownership and a chance to inspect everything that some shops may not check.

You know what oil they are putting in your vehicle, and you know that oil was actually put in. Did they really put in synthetic? Did they even change the oil? Sadly did they even put oil in after they drained it? I know of two people who drove off from these places only to have their engines seize up on the drive home from having zero oil in them. With these trucks you don't have to jack it up to change the oil. The peace of mind is worth the hour of my time it takes to drive to pick up the supplies and do it myself. Having a drain pan that is also a storage container allows you to take the used oil back to the parts store after every 3 or 4 oil changes.

    I second.
Its sure nice knowing my plug isnt cross-threaded or torqued wrong, that I put my crush washer in, exactly how much oil is in the truck.
My manual calls for 5.5 qrts, kwik kar put 4 qrts in the last time i was lazy and went. Wouldnt bother me too much if the guy didnt argue with me about it saying "we only add what the car needs"
thats not all shops obviously but to me its too easy to risk.

Cost is a non issue for me. I do my own because I cannot trust anyone else.

This is exactly why I do my own oil changes and always have. Properly filled, correct filter (for me OEM filter), correct torque and when my oil container gets full I take it with me on my next trip to the parts store when I want/need something else. No special trip required. Not to mention, it saves time not having to wait in line for a shop to do the work. Oil changes have also gotten much easier for me with bigger tires and suspension :D

I've found I can use better quality oil & for cheaper by changing the oil myself. Not to mention I get to choose exactly what I'm putting in my vehicles. An average oil change costs me about +/- $35 without coupons. Years ago, the one time I took one of my cars to a shop to it was over $50 with a coupon
