I come from Ford. 2015 f-150, 52k on it, My truck was always in the shop, doors wouldn't close, window wouldn't defrost, lights wouldn't work half the time...There was always something and I never made it between oil changes without going in to the shop for something. I honestly wouldn't worry about their engines, I'd worry that the truck will fall apart on you.

The truck will be awesome for about a year, then it's gonna go to shit. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you, but it's happened to tons of people already. The resale value is trash too, you are gonna take a huge bath if you don't keep it for at least 5 years.

That said, if I had to get another full sized truck I'd get another f-150. And when I buy a heavy duty in a year or two for my business, we will be getting a superduty.

p.s. You police, You are ditching the explorers because they are attempting to fucking murder you! Offices all over the country are getting the carbon monoxide pumped right into their cruisers while they watch traffic.

I did in August. Bought a 2017 TSS 4x4 CM. Modding started the day I signed papers. Ordered Pro grille and 6112 Bilsteins. Tundra forum is good but those guys do not know as much about mods as the people over here. Just wish the Tundra still had a locker. Did not use much on Taco but got me out of trouble once. I thought it might take a while to get use to the size of a full size again. About 5 minutes on the hwy was it. Ride is night and day above Taco.

I think they all have there issues, heres a list of what is or was wrong with my 16 tacoma.
1.Suspension bangs when it drops over a pothole, driveway lip or washboard dirt road. Cant duplicate at dealer they say.
    2. Front end howls all the time. Normal characteristic of truck dealer says. Can for a cost put in bushings.
    3. Blind spot monitor quit working. Repaired under warranty.
    4. Window rattles when half way down when on rough road. Cant duplicate dealer says as they drove it down the freshly paved highway.
    5. Stereo just turns off by itself sometimes. Cant duplicate at dealer.
    6. Howling noise from front lower A arm. Tsb fixed it after an argument at dealer.
    7. 16mpg average on my truck without a ton of power. Load up the box with camping gear and 12 foot boat on rack its more like 8 to 9 mpg.
8.Trans shifted wierd and delay into reverse. Tsb repair under warranty but still seems off a bit.
    9. Truck came with low trans fluid.
    10. Stutters when slowing down. Normal for truck dealer says.
    11. Cluncking noise and feel it when coming to a stop. Normal for truck dealer says.
    12. Paper thin sheet metal. Look at it the wrong way and it dents.
    13. Dipstick oil reading is a joke.
    14. Body mount blown out. Repaired under warranty.
    15. Crank sensor recall. Done under warranty.
    16. Leaking rear diff. Done under warranty.

Ive been sitting on the sidelines waiting to buy, happy with my current 2nd gen. What I've noticed just reading. 2016 was a terrible year for Tacoma's. 2017 still had issues, but less. The 2018s aren't seeing near the complaints. I'm happy I waited and confident 2018 and beyond will be relatively trouble free.

In reading all the threads though, I've noticed there's no thread dedicated to Toyota replacing motors under 20k like there are on Ford forums. (look up ford ecoboom). There is a scary amount of people chiming in getting new motors. Probably because they output so much power in such a small displacement. If they're replacing them that early, I can't imagine too many people racking up tons of miles on them reliably.

Says the guy with an '05 Taco! :D That was a bad year for that gen as well. But issues get resolved and people eventually got sorted out. Exactly what will happen with the 3rd gen.

The Ford ecoboost engine replacements? Yes, there are some. Mostly, from the very first years. Strictly numbers wise, yes, there will be more reported cases compared to a Toyota, mainly because of the sheer number of them sold! But mine was super reliable. No issues and tons of power. The blocks are made from CGI, same as diesels. You don't see people leery of diesels going the long haul--which are turbo, by the way. If I could make a full-size work for me, I would trade in the Tacoma and get one today.

My 05 didn't experience any of the early problems of a new design. I think the major ones were the engine mounts and the bearings and blower motor. I didn't have any issues and still haven't yet 13 years later.

I'm not buying into the notion a turbo motor will be reliable. There's just too much that can and does go wrong. Performance, yes, no question. Reliable? too many turbo engines throughout the years says otherwise. How many Tacoma's on this site running into the 300k+ range? I've seen lots over the years. How many turbo motors make it to 200k?

If your talking any turbo, try looking at a Cummins or 7.3 Ford.

I was referring to gas. I don't have experience with Diesel. Probably not too many of us do. Different entirely

Been around them all my life growing up on a farm. Not unusual for either to go 300-400 thousand miles with no major repairs.

I guess I'll have to take your word for it. I'll take my turbo experiences and make my buying choice's differently however.

They also had issues with the rear end blowing up. Then, of course, 4.0L HG issues. But not everyone was affected. Not even close to the majority. JUST LIKE the Ford engines.

Sorry, you're spouting info you don't seem to know much about. Old turbo's were definitely problematic. Heat kills. New turbo's are oil-cooled, properly ventilated. You can find plenty of early ecoboosts closing in on 250-300k miles. Maybe more. Once you get to that mileage, any truck, including Tacoma's, are going to start having problems. You mentioned you've seen "lots" of Tacoma's in the 300k range. Care to post up some of them for reference? I am interested to know what type of repairs have been done and what are needed.

Gen3 Taco problems are part of what pushed me to buy a 2017 Tundra. Same with a coworker except he owned a Gen3 Taco.

That sucks. There will be failures like that when they put so many out there, unfortunately. I remember a friend's 2002 4Runner shot a rod through the block at 70k miles. All dealer serviced. Things happen...

    Like, so many.
Seems like a weird downgrade, but to each their own. This forum is reason enough to own a Tacoma.
