The mechanic tore my CV boot :(

I got my 5100's installed today and I was all exited about it. They leveled out my truck, it looked good and rode well. Then when I got home I noticed everything on the passenger side was covered in grease because the mechanic tore the outermost CV boot. I know they did it because I looked under the truck this morning before I brought it to the shop and nothing was wrong. ARGH, This is going to be a huge PITA.

The mechanic hasn't yet told me what he is going to do about it. I am expecting a call soon.

The question is: do I let these knuckleheads try to fix it, or should I take it to the dealer and see what they can do?

And I need to make a 60 (120 round trip) mile drive on Thursday afternoon. I can't do that with my CV not properly lubricated.

 

1. are they capable of the repair
2. at least call dealer and see what would be involved to repair, mention your trip and see what they say.

The guy makes a mistake and automatically he's a "knuckle head"? If that's your attitude, why didn't you just do it yourself? Spring compressors are available for rent, in 3 hours or less you probably could have had them on.

 

Replacing a CV boot isn't a very extensive job. Just do a pre inspection before and after like you did (good work) and make those shitiots fix it.

 

If someone ripped my CV boot and didn't say anything about it, and found out about it on my own at home, then yes, the guy's a knucklehead.

 

I would say if a mechanic tears a CV boot and releases the vehicle without saying anything he is indeed a knuckle head.

 

As long as he knew he did it at the time.

I've been working as a diesel tech for 7 yrs., mistakes get made, and you don't always know you made them at the time, even when you think you were double checking everything, it happens to the best of us.

If he takes it back and it gets fixed properly, I don't see the issue.

They can be rebooted. I tore mine and drove to Tampa and back before I noticed it.

It could have been an honest mistake. You can't really tell the boot is torn until the truck gets up to speed and slings the grease everywhere.

Anyway here's an update: The guy called me back and said that he will fix it for me. Hopefully he keeps his word. But he needs to order the parts so it won't be done by Thursday.

As for my trip on Thursday I found a shuttle that will take me to the airport for $40 which is reasonable to me. I will be traveling on military orders so I should be able to put that $40 on my travel voucher and get reimbursed for it. Do the more experienced vets agree?

It looks like everything will work out. It is just a major inconvenience, especially because I have two test on that Thursday.
