Did you use the install method they depict, with the clear backer? Was it really that much easier?

Yes, the letters come pre-mounted on a tape strip, already lined up with the proper spacing. You clean the depressions with rubbing alcohol, peel the backer off the strip, line it up with the depressions, and press on. I'm pretty anal about spacing and it was fairly easy to get the letters dead-center.

I got the same ones from that seller and they are very nice. Solid plastic letters, great looks, no complaints. Installed all at once with no problem but I think I'd have been more comfortable cutting them and sticking on one at a time.

I thought about it beforehand but the instructions say to line them all up at once so that's what I did. Not really sure what the huge benefit of doing it that way is but fortunately I got them centered well enough. Would hate to have to to pull them off it they didn't go on right the first time. Again though, it is a nice product and I'm glad it got it. Can't understand why Toyota doesn't want it to pop out in the first place.

Its a cost saving measure. The panel is stamped when the sheet metal is formed and eliminates the need to manufacture and install an emblem. Given the 10+ year manufacturing run this can be a savings of millions of dollars. Placing individual emblems in the stamped letters at the factory would defeat the purpose of the stamped letters.

I hear you but it seems to me that there would be some advertising value to it as well. People a little way behind you see your truck and wonder, "wow that's nice, what kind is it? I don't know, it doesn't say or I can't read it." I know, a little extreme but not impossible to fathom.

Agreed, but Toyota is physically making them as fast as they can to keep up with the demand so I don't think advertising is a big priority for these trucks. They sell themselves! Ford is doing the same thing: The 2018 F-150, Super Duty, and 2019 Ranger all have stamped tailgates.
