Speaking as a IT security guy, you need to change every password you've got for every website you've used from that PC. If you used to access your banks' website from that PC, definitely call your bank and let them know - their IT guys should help out. I'd go so far as to sign up with one of the major 3 companies that can do credit monitoring, it's worth the yearly fee at this point (seriously, as a pro I could do serious damage with your laptop, so I figure somebody else could too. Might just pawn it, they might sell it to a hacker who can do REAL damage) As for any technology to help out in the future, there is such a thing as lo-jack for PC's (http://www.absolute.com/), but it's not cheap - and doesn't help much after the fact. After I had a laptop stolen, I do it for all my laptops now. (it works just like lo-jack, it beacons out to the internet - the companies will even engage law enforcement on your behalf and can help issue warrants) Don't bother calling microsoft, google, or any major online companies for help, they're not allowed to release information. I figured they could let me know when my MAC address connected for a windows update or something. Nope, they don't give a f*ck. Check out some wireless video surveillance kits in addition to your security system, they're getting really cheap - really really cheap. (not preventative, but it'll help track down these fools if it happens again). Also, a good aluminum door with the hinges all fixed up helps. Had a buddy get security film installed on the windows of his place, looks really nice, stops everything but a bullet, and helps with insurance. I'm doing it soon as well. Get the wifey trained up at the range and get those dogs out of the kennel!!! (obedience school works like a charm) Bite training is fun as hell with your dog too... Sorry to hear about the break in, glad the family's okay. Take this opportunity to fix all the stuff you hadn't thought of, and you'll sleep easier.

oh, and if you decide to get a shotty - I picked up an 18" mossberg 500 for like 300 bucks, put a pistol grip on that and you're all set. only thing i don't like is where the safety is on the weapon (compared to the remington 870), but the slide release is in a better place. Either is a good choice, short money in my opinion - can even find 'em at good old wal-mart.

glad she got out alright. hope you made a police report for that. its sick knowing there are people out there that do that kind of shit. pisses me off and i hope every one of them (excuse my vulgarity... but they deserve it) dies a slow painful death for the crap they caused everyone they robbed from.

i know it wouldnt have helped in this case but maybe check in to getting an alarm system.

Glad she made it out ok. Good thing your little girl was with you, so your wife didn't need to worry about her being in a different area of the house with the crumbs in there.

    I hate thieving crooks.

Thats good she got out and all ok, but why didn't she call the police 1st? I mean if you are at home hell yea, blast a fool. But she could have called 911 an possibly had a cop there faster than you and maybe caught the fools

Dont get me wrong, Im all about taking matters into my own hands. But the cops maybe could have responded quicker?

I was about 2 min away(maybe a mile and a half) which my wife knew. She told me someone broke in, then hung up and called the police, The police arrived about 5 min. after I did. In a situation like this(when I am close) I would prefer that she call me first, She and I both know that I will book it and get there faster than the police. You never know with the police, from the time it takes the operator to get the address and send a cop, then if you are lucky and a cop is somewhat close, it is still kind of a crapshoot on when the cops will arrive. I know it will "usually" be quick, but how quick.

    glad your wife is ok

hope she called 911 as well

    a couple of things

    1. a dog
    2. if you're gonna put a loaded 12g in the house for home defense, you're potentially arming your assailant ... bear in mind how you stow and secure your gear
    3. i don't enter the dwelling without a sidearm ... if someone is inside, well, i'm prepared, they're surprised, not me

    oh ... 1911 .45

    good luck, be safe

I agree, I have some good places that most crooks will not bother looking if they are there for valuables.

As for the 1911, I love mine and it is by far the best gun I have ever shot. It is amazing how smooth that gun is. The only drawback is the 8+1 capacity. The thing I love about my M&P 9mm is the 17+1 capacity. That and the ergonomics are very very nice, I picked it because the grip width was very similar to the 1911 which I love and it still had the high capacity. I can't stand guns that have a thick grip like the Glocks, and even the XD's are a tad wide imo (brother has XD 9 and 45). I know the 9mm stopping power isn't as good as the .45 but they are both going to stop someone regardless. If I had the money to get a FNH SLP 12 and keep the Kimber it would not be going anywhere.

wouldn't hurt to attend frontsight or some other local workshop and get some practice on cleaning a house

of course we debate .45 vs 9mm on webforums all day long, and i would never use your thread about your personal experience today to launch such a debate

i merely mentioned the 1911 because that what works best for ME and my application,
and you no doubt have the best tool for you, and your job

i'd hate to even contemplate getting into a situation returning to my home that would run me through 17+ rounds, but i suppose it can happen

on the other hand, if i'm in the home already, and a threat presents itself, i've got plenty of better tools than the .45 to get almost any job done

good luck to you, be safe and be smart, and time and money permitting, prepare for the worst ... you and your family will sleep better

    - yo, see if your wife needs some counseling, you don't know if she's been traumatized or just a little freaked out, no shame in asking for help
