In Canada the numbers are even crazier. 2014 Tacoma retains 82% of its value after 4 years!

 

In my area, my truck dropped 35% after 13 years. It's unreal what these trucks go for around here.

Bought my truck for 34k. Ford and Nissan dealer just offered me 33k and 34k for it with 14000 miles. I was pretty shocked. Not that I would get rid of it.

 

I totalled a 2010 tacoma trd sport with 120km on her in 2017. Insurance payout was $Can 7k less than that i paid for it brand new 7 years earlier.

 

Absolutely insane the resale value of the Tacomas. I had a 2000 Nissan Xterra for 17 years. When I went to trade it in on my new Tacoma KBB had it valued on trade in at only $1500. Similar aged Tacomas were going for $6k to $9k. The resale was yet another reason I had wanted to get into a Tacoma as I typically keep my vehicles over 10 years.

 

My simple mind doesn’t understand this. Why would anyone pay so close to retail for a used truck? If my choices are a used truck for 34k or a new one for 38k, I’ll choose the new. Every time.

 

I only have my 17 because I went to look at a 2015 trd or with 31000 miles on. No price on the truck. Talk to the salesman he won't go below 29500 on it. 4500 was worth 2 years newer and no miles.

 

All I know is I paid $37,500 for my 2017 TRD Sport 8 months ago and it now KBB's at Dealer Trade In for $30,800 with 11,000 miles on it. My trucks value went down nearly 20% in 8 months, per KBB, and that's outrageously terrible.

I can't even trade it in for what I owe on it...

 

KBB is about $4k low in my region. Also, trading in a one year old vehicle is a great way to never be able to retire.

 

I think this might be a local market thing. There was a year-old 2016 DCLB OR automatic in my market last summer with a TRD Pro 1" lift in the front, and KO2 tires on nice rims, originally advertised at $42k with about 17k km. I think he would have paid slightly over $50k for it after tax.

The seller (who was a medical doctor) dropped the price $1000 per week until it disappeared off auto trader at $35k. So the guy took a $15k hit on a truck he owned for less than a year.

Often people don't buy used cars because they don't have the money, and they can't find bank financing for less than 5%. It is quite hard to sell a nearly-new vehicle as a private seller, because you are competing with a new vehicle from a dealer who will finance sketchy people all day long at interest rates that appear to be lower.

The high residual value of Tacomas will for sure suffer now that Toyota is bringing more production on line. I think the high residuals today are more or less explained by scarcity.

 

Agreed, but I need something that can tow better. Looking at getting a 2017 F150 or F150 Raptor.

 

You would probably do much better selling on your own.

Im sure they do ok, but they sucl down gas like a diesel so it would be more wise to opt for the added torque. I loved my Ram 2500 before this Tacoma. I just didnt use it enough.
