It was definitely a learning experience. First time I'd broken something on the trail. Snowed 2ft on us overnight so we ended the trip early, then that happened on the way out. ended up taking 6 hours to get unstuck, past 4 downed trees, and .75 miles up to the trailhead. We'd actually called a friend for help, but he ended up walking down after having to winch downhill to get to us haha. Makes me a lot more careful about going into the snow anymore.

I've thought about carrying a spare axle and fluid because of this. This thought haunts me.

I've never changed one, even in a garage, though.

Honestly, as my income allows it, it's something that I will be packing with me.

Theoretically, it's a pretty easy job. I had a hell of a time getting it out the first time though... the splines on the axle ended up biting into the retaining clip so It took a couple days and an 8lb sledge hitting on a pry bar to get it loose. Once I got my new axle in though, I could get it out and replaced in around an hour. An annoying slow leak out of the seal after gave me a lot of practice with it.

Well. The other thing is to pick your friends well I nuked my front diff in the back country miles from anything in British Columbia.

We just dropped the whole diff and gutted it and put it back together and I drove home.

To have the parts and tools to do that and get out by yourself is...well awesome. And having friends that carry tools and parts to help that you might not have is crucial is situations like that.

I don't go snow wheeling by myself. Ever. Have only gone with a group of very experienced Jeep folks out of Helena. And they're the kind of people that would never leave anyone behind. And I think most of them work on their own rigs.

Course, that also means I never get to go wheeling!! Plus working weekends sucks ass-holio.
