Let's discuss the Ritchie hit. Is there a solid definition of a late hit? .5 seconds? .7?
It was shoulder to shoulder and Backes was admiring his (wiffed) pass and was caught off guard.

 

There is no definition but it’s commonly accepted that if the player has given up control of the puck any hit on that player that is not already initiated is late and possibly interference.

 

I assume if the league was going to look into it and deemed it an issue, something would've already leaked. I'm not seeing anything.

 

Chara has arms longer than most men’s legs.

Based on that I think the delay in initiating the hit is only a factor. The problem is the shoulder shrug to the dome.

 

Getzlaf totally took a punch to the face there and the one camera angle is awesome because you can see him wince lol.

 

The timing on the Ritchie hit looks borderline to me. The fact that Backes has unloaded a shot put him in an unprotected posture. Ritchie would have laid-off on the hit if he didn’t desire to inflict some pain. Was Backes concussed? He has a history.

Part of me wonders if that was an audition for Tavares and they knew that. More than likely not but it’s an entertaining thought.

 

Those Bruins announcers are the biggest homers in the league. The Chara hit later in the video was worse than the initial Ritchie hit. It doesn't even look to me like Ritchie even made contact with Backus head.
