Different gearing.. and us manual folk don't get the 20mpg highway like claimed. I get 15.8mpg on highway going 70mph, stock truck minus tires. Toyota "tested" my truck and said was normal because they get the mpg numbers from a 55mph test. At 70mph I'm at 2500rpm vs an auto at 1700rpm

What the shit.. What's your mileage so far? I'm only sitting at 2400mi, figured it would improve over time a bit

because toyota and japan in general believe that americans don't like to down shift their manuals when on the hwy. so the overall drive ratio is shorter for manuals.

there was a chart posted here i found awhile ago highlighting the gearing differences. i think the auto has 3 overdrive gears and the reason is, it just down shifts when the load is too high for that gear and throttle position. which many complain about....

...I wouldn't believe this unless I saw video proof cruising at 70 on flat ground with the average MPG chart showing bars over 20. I'm not asking you do this...I mean no offense by my disbelief, just stating it as an opinion here.

It's a good thing they are. It would drive like a pig if they gave the MT the same gearing as the AT.

Not even close to good enough to claim 20mpg at 70mph on flat ground. Getting that number to show 20mpg is easy. Tons of ways to do it. Legitimately averaging 20mpg at 70mph on flat ground in these trucks is not possible. They just don't do it.

i understand. The above was about 8 miles of interstate and 4 miles of city with a bit of idling. Normally i cruise at 65ish.

I'll pull up the eco chart on the entune and see what it shows and snap a pic. But I have no mpg complaints here.

My average these days hovers around 17 but that's mixed driving.

Here's what I've seen though roughly...
Cruising 50 flat ground gets you about 20
Cruising 70 flat ground gets you about 17
Cruising 80 flat ground gets you about 15

Anything else just has too much variance to really put an average on. I'd say all in they get about what you'd expect with a 17/20 rating. Mixed driving gets you the low number and 50 mph cruising gets you the high number.

Technically, geared Lower. Great for towing and offroad.

I'm surprised you guys don't get at least 20MPG. My auto is right at 23MPG at 70MPH on the freeway. I've done multiple 200+ mile trips and got exactly that. Past Toyota's have been almost right on as well. I would in no way be happy with 15.8MPG.

    Which model you have?

The 7545 is the least fuel efficient 3rd gen Tacoma you can get. Well tied with the MT Pros.

2017 TRD Pro, all stock, 950 miles. My dash's avg fuel economy shows around 15.1 most times for mixed use. Driving it back from NY when I got it with 12miles, I might have seen high 16s.

Again, mine is auto. '17 DCSB TRD OR 4WD. 100% stock. Highway speed limit around here is 70MPH, which is typically where I keep it at. At 75MPH, it drops to 20-21MPG.
