I see a lot of talk about Bilstein, OME, Toytec and other lifts. And the pics of the Tacomas that have them installed all look great. But I have not seen any mention of the Rough Country 3/2 lift/leveling kit. There kits are reasonably priced and I have a Rough Country 2.5" kit on my 2017 Wrangler and I love it. Is there a reason to stay away from it on the Tacomas??? If you have one on your 3rd Gen please weigh in with specs and pics. Here is a link to the kit I'm referring to. It is $279.95 with free shipping. I'm not trying to be cheap, just wanting to know why no one seems to be running this kit... I'm thinking it would look good on my 2017 MGM DCORSB.

Because this uses spacers to generate the lift. This one might be as bad since it includes shocks that might be longer length than OEM to make up for the spacer. But they get a bad reputation here for breaking your shocks if you actually take it off road.

Plus, it's not that much more to get simple bilstein 5100s. But hey, if you don't really take your truck off road, go for it.

Do you have a good site for the Bilstein setup?

@AntMan408, what about this kit? What would I notice differently with it vs the Bilstein 5100s??? (other than the apparent difference in $$$)

$280 lift kit on a 35k truck????

    WHY SPACERS ARE BAD!!!!!
Spacer lifts are common among Toyota owners because they achieve a look for the truck for less than $300 in parts. They are in our opinion a huge dis-service to the Toyota off road industry for a few reasons that we will lay out here. (Facts, not opinions)

Your Modern 120 series Toyota suspension has a bit less than 9" of suspension travel available in its ball joints from the factory. This travel is limited by the stock strut to 8" over all. 4.0" up and 4.0" down on most models. When you lift your truck, you are raising up the front, lets say a standard 2.5" . So now you have 6.5" up and 1.5" down. When the top spacer is added. You now have 3.5" up. as your shock is now your limiting factor, and 1.5" down as your ball joints are the limiting factor on the other side reducing over all travel from 8" down to 5.0"

3 things that this has caused:

1.) Your ball joints are your limiting devise on down travel and will wear them out or break them.
2.) your bump stop is no longer is the up travel limiting factor, your shock is and will cause your shock to fail on a large hit.
3.) the upper control arm can make contact with your strut or springs causing wear on the shock and control arms.
4.) the over extended down travel can cause your CV axles to over extend and wear faster than expected or break while flexed off road.

There is a short video below that Bilstein put out to put this in a visual for everyone as well. Here at Chitown4x4 we won't install spacer lifts as we feel they are unsafe for the truck and the passengers. Pictures below from real examples of spacer lift failures.

Marie, can you give me a price on the Bilstein set up? I'm wanting 2.5" in the front and 1.5" in the back. I found this setup at Wheelers(see link). What will I notice differently with the Bilstien setup vs a kit like in the link? Do you offer a similar setup? I find your website but unable to find any products you sell in what I'm seeing. I have a 2017 DCOR 4x4 with an auto transmission. Thanks in advance for any and all info...

Are the 1/4" leveling spacers ever going to create such an issue? Running 700# springs and cranking it up on the driver's side to level it was very noticeable. Running the 1/4" now. Thank you.

    No.

I have OME 885 coils with a 1/2" spacer to get 3" of lift. Anything under 1" won't make a difference. That said, hoping to swap them out for ADS coilovers this year.
