mine works when it is really steep

like hard to open the doors steep

it holds, then lets me creep back, then hols, and creeps

with lots of noise from the brake controller...

so, it works, but it is not 'hill hold' it is a true 'assist'

it will stop you from rolling back too much in one go, but not hold you stopped forever

Nothing is wrong with your trucks, and nothing is wrong with the hill-start- assist function. Ill be totally honest with you, Toyota Gave manual transmission drivers the benefit of the doubt, and assumed they would actually know how to drive the truck, and wouldn't need hill start assist until they were in a crazy-off-road trap or locked into a technical climb, or dangling on the side of a rock. And here you guys are trying to cross rail-road crossing at a mild incline, or your sitting at a red light on a hill, cursing the truck, when the truth is its you, and your sub par driving skill.

Probably more for the other person crying "GARBAGE" (Outlier) to their truck when 'operator error' was the cause rather than mechanical failure or some fundamental engineering problem. Lol collateral OP damage sry. And really Tacomaworld is consumed by thread after thread of people crying about the truck being "a piece of shit" or endless threads about problems this truck doesn't actually have. I'm on a crusade to clear the 3rd gen Tacoma's name, so I don't mean to leave innocent victims.---

Is it strange that my Off Road, Auto Tranny Tacoma didn't allow me to move forward? I had to reverse to a flatter part of the hill before my truck would allow me to move forward.

Please .... help me improve my sub par driving skills.

Are you F'ing kidding me? No one NEEDS the hill start assist. ESPECIALLY in my Toyota truck that is AUTOMATIC. I've been driving for 26 years and have never NEEDED a hill start assist. The point that Toyota has designed a shitty system that works like it was engineered and tested by mongoloids, included in a vehicle that doesn't need it any way, and then has the nerve to smile at you when you ask about it and all the weird ass noises it makes, and tell you that it works GREAT... "just as designed sir!"... is LUDICROUS!!!!

My only point about mentioning it on my Ford Mustang that i also own was that i do have experience with how one is SUPPOSED to work on a MT that ACTUALLY BENEFITS from having it!

That is odd. No hill start assist should prevent you from pulling forward when the accelerator is pressed. I'd love to hear Toyota's answer for this one.

Or maybe a quick synopsis from @BadKitty ? (look, i actually tagged him, didn't just bash him in a post to someone else without his knowledge) I am sure he can tell you all about how there is nothing wrong with your truck and how to improve your driving habits so they cater more to your vehicle.

And for the record BK.... I LOVE my truck. I am not a Taco basher in any way, shape or form. My only complaints about the vehicle are the gutless 3.5/ 6 spd auto combo which i understood when i purchased, and this particular feature that is just totally useless in it's current design state. So crusade on brother. Leave me the hell out of it.

Do not understand hill assist on an auto trans vehicle. You have 2 feet, you have 2 pedals. Don't think you need to be a rocket surgeon to figure out you can hold the brake and give it a little gas to keep from rolling back.

Works fine on my MT. 2-3 secs on an incline, releases when I push on the gas.

Same here with my M/T sport. How come the brochure says auto's only. Was a surprise to find that my truck had it!

Me too. I was wondering what the hell was going on then found some info about it either in the manual or on here--don't remember which.

And a hand brake, but I think what some people are getting at is, why have the feature at all if it is not engineered the same as a true hill start assist.

If I'm stopped at an incline and take foot off break, it rolls back a little but I'm on the gas by then. If I keep letting it roll back it starts to kick in and makes all sorts of noise.
If I'm on an incline with foot on the gas and let off the gas, it makes all sorts of "brakes thinking a lot and pumping really quick" noise almost immediately until I step on the gas again. Doesn't matter what angle of incline. Does the same thing going "up" my driveway that has about a 3 degree "incline". Brake controller goes apeshit.

Guess it holds to different magnitudes depending on whether you are stopped or trying to move up hill?

Strange on the AT brake modulation on hills. My MT doesnt make a sound. Just holds for a couple seconds completely silent then releases.

I came to this thread looking for some answers on how this system really works. So I've been driving automatics for quite some time. On several different vehicles that I can remember, the rpms of the vehicle would often seem to do much of the work of keeping the vehicle from moving back. If there was or was not a system, I'm not sure. But if there was, it seemed to work better than this truck's. I've noticed maybe some, but my girl has noticed when driving that it just let's her roll back, not what she's use to in a traditional automatic.

Maybe it's not a passive feature; maybe it has to be initiated.

The service manual states it has a 'regular control buzzer'.
    Untitled.jpg

That, along with what is described in a few Toyota videos, seems to imply it.
Basically you need to press further down on the brake pedal until the slip indicator light blinks; then HSA is active.

Service manual also states it will hold up to 5 seconds.
    Untitled2.jpg

Anyone want to test it out?
