This should probably be in the wheels/tire section but I wanted input from 3rd gen owners.

I recently bought an aftermarket set of wheels. I am debating whether to buy a 5th or not.
I do not have an aftermarket rear bumper so the 5th rim will be under the bed. Do you guys think it will get damaged there?

Also, if I put a tpms sensor on the spare will the 3rd gen taco recognize it? Or will it only recognize the four mounted?

    Thank you for your time.

I don’t think it would get any more damaged than the other four wheels that are on the truck, exposed to the elements.

As far as TPMS, I don’t think the truck can handle any more than the 4 sensors.

The truck can only read 4 sensors at a time. I just had this talk with my dealer.
I was going to get A 5th, but put it on my spare rim.(under the truck) I'm running 265/70/17 K02

Does your truck recognize sensors from cars parked nearby?

Did your sport come with a 17" Steelie under the bed?

I put after market wheels on and bought a fifth for the sole reason being that they used different lug nuts. Normally you would think this is fine but I wanted to avoid the odd chance of someone other then me driving my truck and getting a flat and using the wrong lug nuts which would be really bad.

I know this doesn't answer the OP's question but I thought it might be worth putting it out there.

Op I put a 285/70r17 spare under my 17’ . Fits with zero issues and the way the wheel goes up it goes up nice side up so no damage should be expected. Its not an issue do it. Gen 2 you had to hammer and pry this truck you dont

Thanks for this info. I was curious if a 255/75/17 would fit, figured it was pretty likely. I just need to get a 17" steelie now.

seems like the other posters agree with buying a 5 aftermarket rim...any reason why you are still going with a steelie? I'd like to bring different perspectives into the conversation

Cost, scarcity of SCS wheels, and the slim probability that I'll actually need to use my spare. Even if I do need to use it, I'll still need to go to a shop to get the TPMS swapped, so I may as well just get the damaged tire repaired or replaced, at which time I'll have 4 matching wheels again.

I'm all about value, utility, and practicality, so this path makes the most sense to me.

I purchased a 5th wheel when I got my set, but it wasn't for a spare, it was concern if one of the four I had on the truck was damaged, I'd have a replacement and I wouldn't need a new set of wheels.

I did buy a matching tire when I went to 265/75 on my old truck, which I mounted on the steel wheel. I also had a separate Sport alloy with a stock sized tire to match my snow tires (which were stock sized). The beauty is that when my 2G was totaled I actually still had the 265/75 BFG in my cellar as I hadn't replaced the spare yet. So now with the new truck I've got two spares, one in 265/75 and one in 265/70.

For how rare you will use a spare, I don't see a point in having a matching spare wheel / tire set-up. Just make sure that it's the right size and that it's in good condition / inflated and you should be golden. Also occasionally drop it and oil the winch setup so that you don't have a situation where it's completely seized up. On my 93 Xtracab the winch was completely seized and I had to cut the spare out of the truck. It was original to the truck and almost 20 years old, so the tire and wheel were both completely rotted out.

Should be the same as a 16” steelie, if you wanted to measure yours. Definitely not enough to run a 295 though.
