99 Tacoma Auto to Manual Swap

Hey guys. I've finally made the plunge. I'll fill you in up to now. I have a 99 tacoma extended cab 4x4 with 2.7 and a340f auto trans.

    I also have a 98 tacoma reg cab 4x4 with 2.7 W59 manual.

I have a few questions as to the proper wiring. I've downloaded mosk's diagrams and FSM diagrams.... I'm just not getting it and was wondering if someone could PM me the specific instructions on which wires I keep and where and how to route them. Or even a reply on here to maybe help another someone else.

So... I have the 5 speed manual ready to go in but I want to do the wiring before the tranny gets in the way.

I am using the 98 trucks ECU. Unless its easier just use the auto ECU. I live in a no inspection state...so no problem with a CEL.

If you need any other info to help solve my problem I will be happy to provide it. Thanks guys... I have 4 days off work so I'd love to get this completed.

The Manual transmission crossmember is farther back so you will have to cut and re-weld it to accommodate the shorter length of the W59. You will also basically need to rewire the entire truck since you can't really trick the Automatic ECU into thinking it's a manual.

The swap is easy mechanically. It gets hard when you have to deal with wiring.

Yeah. I would like to get the wiring done before tranny is installed. I'd read about just a few wires such as park/neutral switch and the solenoid wires and that's it. I'm just looking for a specific tutorial or more detailed instructions. I'm still trying. Lol

My kid just did a similar swap. 95 Lexus SC300 auto to R 154 Supra 5 speed. Popular swap with the Drift crowd. There are fab shops making the required parts (xmember, shifter tower....) Don't know about Tacoma parts. Wiring wise, he had to jump the switch that tells the ecu the trans is park or neutral to start. Had to get a new speedo pickup...Like BartMaster said, you may have to use the manual ECU

Ok. Thanks for the tip. I'm definitely brainstorming the EWD.

You can build a "shelf" on the cross member and not cut anything off your frame.

Can you read a wiring diagram? If you are not familiar with it then I suggest figuring that out before doing anything.

I would also recommend getting a 99 manual ecu.

    I can help, PM me.

You actually can "trick" the ECU, but since manual ecus are fairly cheap, I'd highly recommend getting the correct year manual ecu.

I heard that you can, but it involves re-pinning the ECU? I don't recall

I have a correct year ecu for a manual. I just need to know what wires I keep and what wires get the proper connectors. I'm not trying to remove the interior and change out the whole wiring harness. Is that possible?

You wire the ECU in "Reverse", add a few resistors for various transmission sensors and you're ready.

You want a manual ecu for YOUR year truck. You said you have a 99 truck, but have a 98 ecu

You need to double check the wiring to verify the pin on the auto and manual wiring.

If you don’t care about a CEL then all you have to do is hook up your clutch depress switch, clutch release switch, and your backup light switch off of the old Park Nuetral Safety switch. Sounds more complicated then it is.

Can you also just swap the crossmembers from truck to truck? My 4runner was this way and the manual crossmember bolted up in the same spot as the auto one. Also your auto driveline will be about a inch shorter then a manual one

The cross members are all the same. The mounting points are also the same, but are welded on in different places depending on application.

This mod is quite involved. I wanted a 5 speed again when I found my truck. At 61k miles for $6k I overlooked the auto trans. It’s definitely a gutless wonder, even with the supercharger. I would love to do this mod, and it is possible, but it is very involved to get everything working correctly and to keep the CEL off.

For the v6 guys, it's a little simpler, can reuse the tcase and xmember. Wiring is really not that big of a deal, but does take some knowledge. Mounting the clutch master/pedal to me is the hardest

Keeping the cell off is as simple as getting a manual ecu.

I had heard that the manual trans crossmember will bolt right in. Looks like it will from what I've looked at. Got start clutch start switch wired and 4wd indicator and back up lights. Tomorrow should be the first test drive in the evening. I'll let you guys know. Then I have all the other details to attend with... coilover front assemblies, shocks, plugs...wires, new crystal clear headlights, tires and wheels...lol.

Yes...the 98 manual ecu is pinned the same as a 99. Just my truck was an auto... so I have to track the functions down. I was making it way harder than it was. I've found that Haynes manual wiring diagrams are NOT correct in my case. For example... Haynes says park neutral safety is black and red stripe and black. Toyota EWD says its black w red stripe and black with white stripe. So... a Toyota ewd.

I'm totally backwards. Lol. I thought the clutch pedal and line install was simple and straightforward... but the wiring was driving me crazy, til I looked at Toyota ewd.

Ok... I see what you mean. That's how I got the lights and switch to work. Otherwise 95% of the pins are the same on the manual ecu vs the auto. Mainly has to do with transmission stuff. Here's my "shop" ... lol... so it's only been about 30 degrees today. I get about 30-40 minutes of every hour, then I gotta warm up. Anyways... got the new rear main in...clutch and everything associated. New exhaust manifold and gaskets.
