Clean VHF/CB radio installs

My antenna is mounted to the bed rail right behind the cab on the driver side. I don’t have any pics, but it’s really straightforward. The Midland is a great little unit - easy to use, clear sound, and I get goo range with my setup (4-5 miles).

 

On the HF side I just have a 4' firestick - mostly just good for 11m which is my main interest. It will pick up some 10m transmissions if I try, but I don't really use that band nor go searching for signals that much. No tuner, just hardware tuned for best SWR performance on 11m, but if I was more of a ham geek, a tuner box would certainly help.

On the VHF/UHF side I originally had a

$125 Larsen NMO2/70B Pulse Larsen 144-148/440-450 MHz Dual Band 37.25" Antenna - Black

Larsen NMO2/70B which worked well and was not expensive. However when using it offroad the curly-Q coil built into it would snag brush all the time and eventually pulled it right off the truck. I have since replaced it with a Comet SS680SSB which is a little heavier built, spring loaded and sleeker so it won't snag brush.

I currently use mostly fixed channels/frequencies/repeaters so this set up it adequate for my needs at the moment, but like I said, if one is more of a ham and wants to make use of ALL the frequencies then a screwdriver antenna is probably better suited. If you're using the ATAS and Yeasu radio combination , no separate tuner box is necessary. The radio and antenna were designed to work together and will tune correctly. If you have a different radio and/or antenna then a tuner box will probably be needed to make it all work.

 

Did a lot on radio organization. I currently am running a Midland GMRS 40 way Radio. I also have a Yaesu 400xdr Ham Radio.

 

Where did you get that mesh pouch?

 

The pouch was originally for my khans 30 Arc’teryx Leaf pack. I decided to put the pouch there a year or so ago. The pouch is from London Bridge Trading.

Blue Ridge Overland Gear sells a pouch similar as of last year I think also which they advertise for placing exactly in the same place.

Love the NiteIze mounts. It's so much easier than trying to slide the bullshit into the slot.

What kind of antenna are those (referring to the donkey dick and cow pie aka low profile antennas)? Are all 3 antennas required to run for cb use?

The adhesive that they have in the kit is shit. I cleaned with alcohol with rubber gloves on, followed the instructions to a T. I ended up mixing some 2 part epoxy and perma-mounting it. You can see the shine from this angle, but from the driver's seat it blends right in.
