    So I bought the 2017 taco about 2 months ago. Only has 3k miles on it with only an AC 35W HIDs and led interior lights as MODS. Turned on the truck to a burnt smell and all of a sudden the thermostat is out. Tried looking at the fuses but can't tell which one it is exactly. (There's a lot of HTR fuses). Has anyone experience this to their truck? Looking to go to the dealer first thing tomorrow morning. Any ideas of what may have happened?

    Do you mean the control unit inside the truck? The thermostat goes in the engine bay and is not an electronic piece it’s a heat sensitive part the expands or contracts with the coolant temp

    Sorry, mispoke. Went to the dealership and they stated that the ac compressor went out. 2 months and already out? Going to take 10 days because they needed to order it from Japan. :frusty: At least they gave me 4runner as a loaner.

    :facepalm::rofl:Seriously ?

    Maybe we should buy a Honda ? Wait. They forgot recently to put the piston c clips in 34,000 engines !
    https://www.civicx.com/threads/2016...pin-snap-ring-issue-affecting-some-vins.1669/
    All affected units will require use of a borescope to inspect the four cylinders to confirm correct piston pin snap ring placement.

    Seems pretty unusual. It would be interesting to know exactly what failed and how. Even a seized compressor won't give a burnt smell unless the clutch is locked and the belt is screaming and burning. But that usually breaks after a few minutes of that torture.

    Also curious about the part coming from Japan. I would have thought the compressor to be the same as 2nd gens, but apparently not.

    I was thinking more of that electric booster heater 3rd gens have that creates some warmth before the coolant gets to temp. That would have a thermostat and it's in cab, so a failure could smell. And that part might be hard to come by too.

    When you get your completed service order after the job is done, maybe you can post it for our reading pleasure. Weird guys around here like @Jimmyh and myself (and others) like learning about these one offs......................

    Level lifts, tires, wheel offsets, HIDs, LEDs and plasti dip are getting stale.

    I'm with you...
    It's one thing for it to fail physically; the 'why' is more important. If it's not a manufacturing defect in the compressor itself, could happen again.
    Be nice if there was a DTC to go with the diagnosis.

    I was thinking the same thing too about the AC Compressor, I wanna say in both my 1st and 2nd Gens that they had a GM AC Delco Sticker on them but haven't had a chance to check on my 3rd Gen yet.

    Maybe I am wrong, its been a couple years since I been under the hood of a 2nd Gen but I thought it had an AC Delco Sticker or maybe a DELPHI Sticker.

    I'm betting the compressor was still good and just the clutch failed. Compressors don't short out. They're mechanical, not electric. The dealer will just replace the entire unit since they don't get paid to think.
