I dropped my truck off at the stealership today bc I’ve been smelling fuel for a few days now. I thought my truck may be running rich. However, I just found out that I have a fuel leak and will be without my truck for a week. Apparently, they believe that the high pressure fuel pump is the problem. I’m curious if anyone else has had any issues with fuel leaks? I’ve invested a ton already in this truck with lift, tires, wheels, ARE topper, and 4.88 gears. Hopefully this will be the last of my problems. I love the truck but with the gear issues (now fixed) and this fuel leak it’s starting to get ridiculous. Hopefully I won’t have anymore problems after this!

*I just got a call from Toyota saying a part on my fuel system was crimped and that part is on back order for at least 2 weeks. They also found a small slash in my coolant hose so they’re replacing that too. I’m stuck driving a F150 for the time being. Ive never had any problems like this with previous vehicles I’ve owned. I guess my time was due.

Haven't heard of fuel leak issues on the 3rd gen, I've had mine for 2yrs and has been trouble free outside replacing a notorious or potentially troublesome tps sensor.

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
The part on backorder--what part is it? It's worth knowing. Being on backorder only implies 2 things that I can think of off the cuff: The part has been failing on so many Gen3 Tacomas that it is being replaced at a rate beyond the capacity of the supply chain to meet the demand, or it's such an obscure part that would never be known to fail, so it isn't kept stocked in the supply chain.
If you could tell us what the part is, and even a part number, other forum members may be able to share their experiences and we can build the forum fund of knowledge on these types of problems.

It was more with the shifting or lack there of. I would be at 3500rpm at 70-75 and it would never shift down. Averaging 11.8mpg. Once I installed the 4.88s the issue went away and I’m back up to 18-20mpg.

I remember at least one thread where the high pressure fuel pump (itself or near) was leaking. There was a pool of fuel under the truck iirc

So not really an issue with the truck but an issue because you put larger than stock tires on.

I had a 08 with the same setup. 2 inch lift with 285/70/17 and didn’t have the erratic shifting and gears holding at high rpms. So I’d say it’s an issue with the truck and how Toyota geared and mapped the shifting points with the 3rd gen.

dang. so they found the issue, gave you a loaner, are going to fix it the minute they get the part, and also found an issue that you didn't know about that they are taking care of. Hope this doesn't happen to you again.

I’ll ask for the exact part number next time I talk to the service manager. He said it was the first time they’ve seen the problem at their dealer and apparently Toyota has 30+ of these parts on back order.

Complaining that the truck has issues when you've modified it away from stock is ridiculous. It wasn't intended to run that way. It wasn't marketed that way. When you modify things from stock, you have to change things. Like cab mount chops, upgraded gears, UCA's, etc.

Are you going to say that the truck also had issues with rubbing on UCA's or the cab mount with larger tires?

Lol ok smartass. I’m not complaining about the service. This is my 4th Toyota and never had any problems them. I’m just saying it’s the first time having multiple issues on a new vehicle with 8k miles. Spending nearly 3k on gears doesn’t help if I didn’t have to do that this thread wouldn’t exist. It’s surprising to me having a fuel leak this early.

So far I see one issue which is being taken care of user warranty. What more can you expect? Parts fail sometimes.

My friend, modding trucks is fun. Cool looking and all that.
With that said, your vehicle is the most reliable and durable it will ever be when it is in stock configuration.
    Good luck.

I agree with that for the most part, but I also believe you can make your vehicles more durable and reliable over stock.

:) Please name me just one aftermarket mod that will do that, considering our trucks are used in all conditions for all applications, hauling people on the interstate to hauling wood on a trail.
Also, any weight added will lose efficiency and hasten wear on rotating parts. For example, adding an E rated tire will decrease bearing life and CV joint life due to additional weight.
There might be a mod out there that truly would add reliability and durability in all applications and all conditions, but components like shocks, skid plates, sliders, bumpers, etc only add durability in a specific application, not all applications.
