You crawl underneath and check the foundation and other structural things? Some people just cover over things to make it look nice to make a profit without actually addressing the issues that matter.

I didn't personally. Nothing was obvious or concerning. I made sure to look at joints for cracks, pooling of water, water damage, all windows open easily, plumbing, fuse box, etc. The VA requires a professional looks over the house before I can purchase so I should know any issues before.

Got an Outback, with dual swing-outs and jerry cans. On the one hand I'm going to love getting those Rotopax off my tailgate - those are cool expo points, but not as usable as they should be (too small as containers, and in the way on the tailgate). On the other hand, I'm going to have a problem fitting in the garage now, so am going to have to figure something out...

The route from Boise up through Macall and into cda is pretty cool drive.

 

Hope that your VA inspector is better than ours. Our guy took several weeks to show up and a couple more to do his write up. The VA "livability" inspection was pretty cursory, seemed to be looking for a standard slightly above "condemed". They're more concerned with establishing the market value of the place and deciding how big of a loan they're willing to cover.

The actual Home Inspector that we paid for was the guy who gave us real details about issues with the the house and a prioritized list of things that needed immediate work.

I wish I could say that was true. We both said it was exactly what we thought would be the perfect place within our budget...minus the garage space.

Guess the good news is I have made a few friends with shops I can use now.
