So I just purchased a 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 DC. It had 3 miles when I picked it up and is the first brand new vehicle Ive ever owned. I saved up for years to pay cash for this thing and was super excited the day had finally come. So it was a surprise to me that the next day at 40 miles on the odometer, my check engine light came on. To make a long story short, my truck has been at the shop for a week and still won't be released until next week. They first thought it was the charcoal canaster that had a small internal leak, but I was informed last night that they swapped out the fuel tank module from another 2018 on the lot to check something with my computer. I wish I could post the message I received regarding the issue. Apparently my truck was involved in a national Toyota meeting on the engineering side. It's good to know I have so many people involved with my truck but I am beyond pissed that I received a messed up truck from the factory. I have been trying to get Toyota to replace my truck with a new one, but thet won't do it. They want to fix it. Nothing like paying cash for a new truck just to have it tore apart and tested for a week. I'm alot calmer about the issue today but it has been a roller coaster of a ride for me. One good thing that has come out of this is Toyota has upgraded my warrenty to 8 years 125000 mile bumper to bumper. That still doesn't change that the new truck experience has been robbed from me and the feeling I have about the whole situation. I just want it to be over with so I can move on and forget about this. My only option for a new truck would be to trade my truck in and purchase a new vehicle. (Remember the truck has 40 miles on odometer). I will probably eat 3-4k to do this, I don't know. I feel Toyota has let me down and robbed me of any joy of buying a new truck. So, what do you guys think and thanks for letting me vent a bit.

I'm kind of in the same boat..

But I have 15,000km on my truck... I found out my rear springs needed to be replaced not long after buying my truck... It shakes when stopping, and the springs change the pinion angle to help stop the shake...

I put off the work ast the dealer because I just don't trust anyone to work on my stuff.. Something always happens...

So when I got the work done, they forgot to tighten my hanger bearing on my drive shaft, and it fell apart on the road... Had to have it towed, took it to the place that fucked it up and they put new bolts in and I was good they say...

Didn't offer me anything byt a coffee for my troubles..

I feel like I want to unload the truck now... My GM never left me on the side of the road in near 5 years.. Not even a hiccup..

I may also take the hit and go back to dads brand

Hate to hear that, but I understand your frustration OP. I’m sure I would feel the same way. Just stay patient, and Toyota will take care of you. If you have any ongoing troubles with it, you could have the option to enforce the lemon law. And I wouldn’t worry about them tearing your truck apart. Odds are you are going to do that anyway when you start modding.

Just stay patient and all will be well :)

I realize you are having some serious frustration over this, and I get it, but please step back from the edge of the cliff. It sounds like a small component is kicking an error code. This is not an engine or transmission swap. They will sort it out and your vehicle will be fine.

I have the paperwork around here somewhere. I was looking for it yesterday but couldn't find it. I might of left it in the truck. I'll post the code later but it did say "large gross leak in emmisons system". They did a smoke test on truck but couldn't find the leak. They were going to try and replace the charcol canaster but the toyota engineers stopped them and had them swap out the fuel tank module.(I might be wrong on the name of part) They sent testing graphs back to Toyota and are waiting to hear back. Sounds like they think it might be software or computer related.

let it go. Stuff happens. It does suck, but getting really bent is not going to make you feel better. And yes, many people would probably cry if they saw the mid-repair condition I have their vehicles in sometimes.

My 2015 came to me with 11 miles, first year was great aside from 2 factory tires getting holes before 30k. Then at 22k miles my rotors became warped, said it was a wear item and wouldnt replace it. Dealt with it till 40k miles. I beleive 20k miles of shaking with the brakes ruined my steering as its "aligned" but pulls left all the time. Ill take the blame for my interior rattling as my audio system did that. But before i did that my headliner started sagging an inch. Had it replaced and it still sags. After the bass it sags even worse. And last week at a mere 71k i developed a crank seal oil leak. I feel your pain.

These trucks do a cold test randomly on the fuel/evap system...

At night, sometimes you'll hear the truck clicking and humming and this is the test performing... It only does it at certain temps and usually at night..

The test has picked something up... Hence your code..

Emissions leak problems are very tough to track down so that's why they are troubleshooting all those areas, whatever the out come they have to make good on fixing it since you now have a new 128k bumper to bumper warranty.

I think one of the biggest reasons (rationalization?) that many use to buy new vehicles revolves around having a warranty.

IE don't buy used, you're buying someone elses problems.

Well, you're getting to use yours. And you got a huge bump in the miles/time for free.

Keep the truck 10-20 yrs and neither you or any prospective buyer will care what happened at 40 miles.

No, you bought a truck that has a problem. Very different.

I get it, about being frustrated. But this too shall pass.

You're almost there, but not quite. You didn't buy a "problem truck", one component out of the 30,000 on your vehicle has an issue. It will be found, fixed, and you will be back to enjoying your new truck. Odds are there will be more small problems, however odds are also that you won't have major issues.

We all like to vent our frustrations, but in the grand scheme of life, this doesn't even register. Humbly offering a little calibration on your persepctive.
