Glad to see someone else using an open face reel. Can't stand a baitcaster.. I could look at one wrong and end up with a bird nest.

    Spinning reels ftw!

I've got a couple Abu Garcia ambassadors that I striper fish with.. but you're not constantly casting with those.

For crappie and bream, I use light/ultralight rods with Shimano or Abu Garcia spinning reels.. nothing crazy expensive though.

That's the same setups my dad and I use. He also loves to striper fish, all his usernames are striperjim

Yeahhhhhh... I'm at 387 as of this morning. But hey, down from somewhere around 450 (by my best guess). Still working on it, but it's definitely not a quick journey. But hey, didn't put it all on overnight, it's not going to come off overnight.

I use a spinner for my small-medium surf, finesse, ultra light, and panfish setups. Learning to use a caster was the best thing to ever happen to my bass game and surf fishing casting distance though. They've both got their place.

I've grown up pretty much only using spinning reels. Probably cause I've never really gotten into bass fishing (besides catching these 1-2 bass that are about 8 or 9 lbs in the pond beside my house. But all I have to do for them is catch a little crappie and use it as live bait. I swear I've caught the same bass at least 6 times cause I go down there and see it swimming around every day in the same spot).

The only stuff I usually fish for is crappie/ blue gill at ponds, striper at lakes, and all sorts of stuff in the bay/ocean (striper, flounder, cobia, Spanish mackerel, etc.) but I think my all time favorite fish to catch is spadefish around the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel with light/medium tackle. Talk about a fish that fights hard for its size.

I went through my dads facebook and found a few older pics. I was like 6-7 in the first few.

That first pic. reminds me of the days my grandfather started letting me drive the boat and teaching me. I was a little younger than you though, he started taking me out to the stream when I was about 3. I have been doing similar with my daughter she's been a boat since she was 2 not out to the stream yet though don't have a boat that can handle that.

As far as reels go I grew up on spinning gear and big ol conventional set ups. Never really got into baitcasters until recently. It is something I am learning and want to get some more reels and rods and get better at.

Yup...grew up islands and coasts due to my dad being Navy. We kept a boat and was always out deep. Everything was spinning reels and big deep sea gear for trolling and some bottom fishing. I didn’t get into freshwater fishing until pretty recently but naturally everything I got was spinning gear. I tried a bait caster a couple times and I could definitely see the benefit but figured I better learn how to use my fly fishing gear I dropped a small fortune on (damn buy once cry once) before I tried something else new.

Couple years later and I’ve still got all brand new fly gear that I don’t know how to use very well. Bought it to sight fish for tailing reds.

I’m thinking we should talk about a Badin Lake fishing trip to URE. We could camp, hit the trails, and fish. The first and last time I was out there I brought my kayak and got on the lake to check it out...didn’t fish but the little bit of the lake I did see looked like good fishing.

There is free places to camp and then after Apr. 1st we could go wheel could take up the entirety of your trip there. Half of Badin lake is Nat'l forest and uninhabited the other half has docks and houses all over it. It's a pretty cool place I take my scout troop there fairly often. There are some hiking trails, state game lands (hunting), and a gun range on the property as well.

But you don't have a crawl box and a twin sticked FJ case :p! I like your build as well! One of the nicer LB builds on here!

Any of you guys recommend a good fishing forecast app for iOS? One with weather, tides, etc.?
