I've got 255/85r16 BFG KM2s mounted on 1st Gen TRDs (equivalent of 3/4" spacers) love the tall skinny tires.
I've gone wheeling with mostly fat tire guys 285s & 315s.
Went playing in the mud & the fat tire guys were slipping & sliding while I cut right through it.

Went playing in the snow & my little 4Banger with open difs & skinny tires was plowing virgin snow for the V6s with at least one lockable axle. Snow was 4" - 8" in the flat open areas & 12" - 24" on the up hill slopes.

Very nice, I have a similar truck. How much lift did you put on it?
    Thanks.

I keep reading about "regearing" with larger tires. Do you guys running these tires need to regear? Is there a lot power loss?
    Thank you

@IronPeak can I get a picture from the rear of the truck and another close up of the tire from the back and side? The AT2 actually seem to have a wide tread design that doesn't look too skinny!

I regeared, not by choice. blew a ring an pinion, so I took the opportunity to regear. 33's with 4.56, 2400 - 2500 RPM at 75. Happy with the new gears.

I have the OME BP51, with the regular, older Dakar pack in the rear. So 3/2 lift or so.

Nice write up. I first started with 285/75-16 BFG KO2 on my 97 T4R and they did ok. But they were noticeably heavier, had a lot more rubbing and were actually kind of a disadvantage on snow.

Then I bought a 02 T4R and went 255/85-16 Maxx ST and what a difference. No rubbing, better mpg, similar acceleration, much lighter and way better in the snow. Ive yet to test them in deep mud but the tire is alot more agressive than the KO2.

Anyone switch from 285/75/17 to a 255/80/17? Debating making the switch so I can get lighter tires and hopefully better mpg but I just love the look of the 285... any thoughts?

Had 285s on my 07, also DCLB (75/16s, not 75/17). The 285s definitely made the truck slower off the line. Also reduced mpgs. Just got the 255s on my 15 and have noticed the things I expected (slightly harsher ride going to E rated, stuff like that) but feel the 255s are better and would buy again. Not enough data to see if affects mpgs yet, but definitely less sluggish that the 285s. The 255 toyos i picked were 50 lbs as opposed to 62 on the 285 coopers so big big difference there.

I'm just not sure if I will like the skinny look.. I see pictures and like it just unsure in person! My current ATII Toyos are 63 pounds and E rated and the 255/80/17 Toyo ATII are 50 pounds and are E rated I think!

They are 50lbs, and i have been randomly complimented/asked specs in parking lots twice on the tires since installing just a few days ago.
