Just 2 weeks shy of 1 year anniversary at 10384 mi, decided to change the F/R differential oils and engine oil/filter.
Before all, I marked the level of the new oil on the bottle to know how much to refill it with old oil. Clean oil pan, removed the fill and drain plugs and let the rear diff oil drain. Waited for about 20 min till no more oil was dripping, put back the drain plug and started to pump the new oil in. Took 4 qt. and a bit more than 1/2 from the 5th bottle till it started to drip out.
Now time to dump the old oil into the empty bottles. At the end I ended up with 3 full qt. and a bit more than half in the 4th bottle. Since it took 4 1/2 qt in and got out only 3 1/2 qt, who stole 1 qt of oil? Dealer said all was checked and full to specs.
All other oils were OK, not too dirty and on the mark.

You could've just stuck your finger in the fill hole before you drained it to know if it was low.

Oh man, glad I did this at 5k. Did you use severe gear too? I didn't measure what I drained, wish I would have now.

Just think how much $$ Toyota saves by not adding that last quart in all tacos that come with the locking rear diff!

Assuming the dealer is telling the truth and actually checked the diff fluid level during PDI, it would've been done on a lift, where the rear axle would be in full-droop and tilted back a little. Whether that's enough for a full quart to spill out, hard to say.

BTW the nominal capacity for the rear diff is 4.2 qt, according to the owner's manual: https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM04017U/xhtml/OM04017U.html?locale=en (pg 630)

Time to do the front diff. as it is likely low as well.... My front and rear diffs were low from factory.. T/C was OK.

Dealers do not check them on PDI.... They just pull off the plastic protectors and scratch the paint during a shitty wash..!!
