:D yeah, those middle of the night having to take a leak, I am half asleep anyways, no good would come out of it. Why I like my Wildernest, no ladder to fuss with, just roll out of the bunk into the bed of the truck and out the back you go.

Mine is pretty tough, don't think she would go for that either.

Now you have two things covered in piss to drop on the mattress. :p

Oh I know....I use to race sailboats offshore...down to Veracruz, camped most of my life on surf trips to Mex and Central America( I had a 1972 VW camper bus, I rebuilt the engine, balanced it, tore out the interior and renovated it for extended camping, water tank, stove , fans, 3 12volt batteries etc, back in 1974 thru 1986, sold it and bought a Isuzu truck with a small camper) loved that VW camper thing), chased waves around the world in 3rd world countries, and today some decent products for dealing with the no bathroom thang....though I prefer recycling out by a bush or tree ; ), easier, no equipment. I did look at these top tent campers, even mounted on a small trailer....I do think they are pretty cool. Just figured I’m not there yet as far as it being practical for me. I am looking at the Dodge panel vans, they have a Mercedes engine in them....supposeably good for 200,000+ miles. I would just build it out for traveling/camping.
And being on the Texas Gulf Coast we only have about 4 -5 months of camping outside kinda weather because otherwise it’s hot and humid. When I was younger wasnt a issue, anytime chasing waves in the tropics and out in a village or remote area, surf over-rided the environment....always. ; )
So not knocking the tent on truck thang.

And yep, your dad is right! Spent my earlier years racing sailboats, first mono-hulls, then catamarans (Nacra’s) then bought a larger mono-hull J-boat...all rigged for racing and always breaking something and just because it has the word ‘marine’ or ‘boat’ associated with any of the boat parts including rope, it’s always like 300% more expensive! Sold my J-boat and just raced other people’s big boats...was fun since I wasn’t dropping big bucks on all things as a boat owner, boat dock fees, storage etc.

The tent opens fully on all four sides (and the one I have zips fully open at the roof, too). I have made use of this at night to solve the exact problem you mention.

    Some people?

    Is it really that difficult?

I'm sure by now you are all adults and can regulate your bladder intake before the night is over, pee before going to bed, and don't be such a weenie when it comes to relieving yourself in the middle of the night.
    :smack:

It's really NOT that hard to climb down a ladder when you REALLY REALLY just have to go at 3am.

Probably better off staying in a hotel room.

    Actually...

Getting old sucks, 3:00 am piss breaks are mandatory anymores.

I have pretty bad back, and fairly klutzy...have about killed myself walking down the three steps off our front porch.

Have spilled my coffee so much every morning, my wife made me buy one with a wide base and sippy lid.

Have been told my bad back causes me to be clumsy. Yeah, pissing into a gatorade bottle at 3 am with my butterfingers wouldn't be good. :D

I'm no spring chicken myself, but damn it, I refuse to give up. Will always look for ways to make stuff happen.

If we get to a point in life where climbing up and down isn't an option regardless of the 3am piss, it might be time to settle on ground level camping again. Or hotel it.

    But....
Those folks that are still healthy as a horse, and have no issue with ladders in broad daylight, have ZERO reason to knock a product that works really well for those that choose to afford it, 3am piss break aside.

If a guy wants to sleep on the ground, good for him.

If a guy wants to sleep in a high end car top tent, good for him too.

What are we to make an issue of the choices of others camping gear, shy of a Coleman 7500w generator running till the wee hours charging up a guy's cell phone.

I would not camp on the ground again after having a copperhead visit us one night.

Yeah, they can climb ... but I will take my chances on top of a truck :) ... instead of on the ground where everything crawls ..

Yeah, everyone's needs and wants are different.

I used to tent camp and slept in the bed of the truck under a topper for years and years, and pretty much still do as my Wildernest is more or less a combo of the two...still pretty basic and raw. I almost bought a RTT instead of it, the ladder and not being able to change into my moto gear (easily) was a deciding factor. Even today, went for a dirt bike ride...was changing into my gear beside my truck and the wind was whipping, kept think how nice a high roof Sprinter or Transit van would be right about now. Thought about opening the 'Nest to get out of the wind, but feared it would screw up the canvas.

As I am getting older and all my old injuries starting to catch up to me, mang...a RV or TT is starting to look good to me, especially coming back from riding dirt bikes all day...nice hot shower, big bed, a real table and seats to eat meals at. And to think I used to make fun of my friends and call them pussies for having those things :D

If a guy can afford several options, and has an open mind regarding others options, all the better.

Over the years I have needed different camping arrangements for different reasons, resulting in quite the vast differences of what I still have on tap for use.

    Yep!

Just need to win the lotto so I can have it all! Moto tent camp for the super gnarly stuff, Tacoma camper for 4Wheeling offroad, Sprinter camper van for trail head moto hauling/camping...and a RV for when I am feeling really lazy...

    Lots of sail boat fuel
The argument of ground tents vs Rtt is like arguing why buy a boat , I can effin swim. Haha.

Who cares why people buy them. The few people I've met personally that have Rtt love theirs as much I love mine.

I live in New England. $1200 for a Rtt is the same cost for 3 years of skiing. And I'm sure I'll get way more than 3 years out of my rig.

Maybe I'm getting soft or just worked outside my whole life. But I've never been camping so much in crappy weather as I do with my RTT. We don't even bat an eye when its 30* or pouring for days straight.

    Really? Getting all pissy? Adults?
You know nothing about about getting old Spring chicken. Has nothing to do with regulating your bladder intake unless you quit drinking by 6pm at best. Climbing down a skinny metal ladder just to take a piss....yeah sucks. I would do the bottle thang first. And then passing ‘judgement’ better off in a hotel room? Been in more rough places in the world than you will ever be Cupcake.
Your momma didn’t spank you hard enough....and you didn’t learn nuthin.
    Hilarious...
