Trouble balancing new BFG TA/KOs

Just bought a brand new set of 265/75/R16s from Costco, and brought them to be installed at Andy's, my usual walk-in tire/oil change garage (there was a 2-week wait at Costco).

The guys at Andy's were not able to balance one of them, and therefore thought that the rim was bent. As well, they had to add an unusually high amount of weight to balance the others. I brought it to Toyota and got them to check it, and they informed me that the rim was fine. However they did confirm that they too could not balance the wheel, and noted that the amount of weight used to balance the others was excessive. They said that it must be the tires.

My question: has anyone seen this situation before, where there were issues balancing a set of brand new tires? Is it possible that the tires are defective and not balanced properly? (especially where they're BFGs)

Any input would be appreciated.

A Hunter machine will either balance the tire or let you know if the tire is out of round. Surprised the Toyota dealer doesn't have one...or did they? If so, they should know enough to use the adapter too but I've read otherwise on here. Good luck!

Thanks. There are a few dealers with this machine in my area, I'll check it out. Only thing is, its the Volkswagon, Honda, Nissan, and Chevrolet dealerships that have them! A Canadian Tire in the area has one, maybe I'll go there.

I brought them back to Costco, and they tried balancing them there. No dice. So they tried balancing another brand new BFG TA/KO on that rim, still couldn't get it to balance. They too, noted that there was an unusually high amount of weight used to balance others. Luckily, because I couldn't balance them, Costco refunded me the cost of the tires, even though I have been driving on them for almost a week.

So they (Costco) tried balancing my old all seasons (the ones that came stock) and had no trouble, as very little weight was required to balance. So in the interim, I'm using those. Which is great, but now I'm spoiled to look of the aggressive, bigger tire!

The manager there figured that even though the rim was within spec (Toyota's same words), there was a slight bend in the rim, and that perhaps a heavier tire like the BFG TA/KO 10 ply was just amplifying the imbalance.

So now I might just wait to get alloy wheels. Although, perhaps the Haweka suggested by bb609 would help. Either way, I"ll probably just get Toyota to look into it. I do have to put her in soon to get a slave cylinder for the clutch, anyways. Maybe I"ll get them to try installing new tires.

i had the same problem with a Duratrac 285/70/17.

Tire had lateral runout and could not be balanced. Sears confirmed this and replaced the tire, no charge.

 

Have them spin & balance the tire. THen - have them rotate that same wheel/tire 180 degrees on the machine and spin them again. This will further 'fine tune' the first balance.

tacoma's need to be "hubcentric" balanced, other wise you will always have a vibration. which mean they have to get them completely hub centric on the machine before they balance them. aftermarket wheels usually come with the hub centric mounting tool, but stock rims will be alot harder to get right.

 

I'm just about ready to buy new tires for '08 sport.

I had BFG's on my last two trucks (both pre tacoma Toy 4x4's '86 and '91) and I always had a hard time getting them and keeping them balanced. Given their added weight and dimensions, I believe that is mostly why along with my cheep rims. I still loved the tires and just considered the out-of balance situation a minor nuisance as I still would get 55-60K out of each set.

Now that they are 200+ each for my new size for the sport 17" wheels, I'm wondering if I can do that.

So I am considering just buying 3 new dueler H/T's to match the spare that is new and drive on those for another 40K before I need to decide again.

I've got moto metal 16x8's ordered, as well as Duratrac 265/76/16's. According to the website, the moto metals are not hubcentric. Will I have an issue with vibrations or anything else on my Tacoma because the rims are not hubcentric?

 

No. Most (all?) aftermarkets are lug centric.

 

Thanks, that gives me peace of mind. So as long as the wheel balances (whether its hub centric or lug centric), there should be no problem?

 

Wow...guess I was lucky then. Just got new LT265-75/16 Dakota A/T's and they balanced perfect

 

AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS !! HAD TO KEEP TURNING THE WHEEL AND TIRE GUESS THEY BOTH HAVE GOOD AND BAD AREAS! NOW RIDE IS THE KIND!!.

 

You know there's lowerecase letters on the keyboard too, right? Just Kidding. Sounts like the tires are out of round. On a side note, wheels are coned on the balancer most of the time. The Kaweka spacer only works if the aftermarket wheel is perfectly centered on the spacer. You're better off still coning the wheel on the outside of the wheel to center it better. Hope this information helps.

just wondering How much did you pay for your BFG's at Costco?

 

I'll be buying new wheels and tires soon. Im planning on the 17in XD Hoss and either the KM2s or these BFG ATs.

What all do I need to know about this when i have a shop mount and balance?

Also, how do you guys know that the tire shop monkeys are gonna even do any of this extra effort mentioned here in this thread?

I think it was $900 or $1000, in that ball park. That's in Canada though, and you'll probably find them quite a bit cheaper in the US.
