I still don’t get it. Did that house come with some really nice land or something? Was it gifted to the new owners or what? Or did they just cluelessly buy it without having it inspected?

Its an oversized lot in a nice neighbourhood that is about 200' from the ocean , they bought it with the intention of doing a full gut renovation

I look at stuff like this as it doesn't have to make sense to me, just has to make sense to the folks paying for it, keeps things simple for me.

Did they leave part of it, to treat it as a remodel instead of new construction?

There are setback considerations but you could have built new in generally the same spot with essentially the same footprint . The original idea kept the entire floor framing and most of the exterior walls , it was after we gutted the house that we found issues with the rear portion if the floor framing and decided to remove it which is why the back half of the house is on the temporary beams which will come out when we frame the new walls on our foundation up to the underside of the existing second floor .

It looks crazy with the old house hanging over the site but if we had bulldozed the house and dug a new hole I would still be doing exactly the same foundation work .

If all the unknowns were knowns at the initial planning stages of this job then that option likely would have received more attention but that ship has flown the coop

You got to war with the coop you have, not the ship you want.

Dealt with a few who seemed sane, "no your Windows can not be at all the same plane when your house has a few step step down."

And built this to match an 11 year old cherry kitchen.

I as well see light at the end of my tunnel finally. with this last little corner piece in place, I have finally finished all the baseboard trim in my basement. All told I'm very happy with the outcome seeing as the last time I installed trim was 16 years ago in shop class. But I can say that after putting in trim for a 1400 square foot basement which I designed myself. I am very mad at myself for the amount of angles and walls I put in place.... haha. But it's done. wife was going behind me and filling and sanding the nail holes so that saved my knees some. I caulked the seam's as I went to save myself time. Now we are on to paint.
