@EatSleepTacos When I lived in Washington, they took fatal crash investigations SUPER seriously. Like, DOT + WAHP shutdown the main freeway during rush hour so they can measure skid lengths seriously.

Even if the state didn't look at it, if the other party decided to lawyer up in a civil suit...

Do they ever! The amount of paint that can be seen for a few weeks after an investigation is impressive. The bad part is how often you can see it.

I have been in two major wrecks in my life, not counting the dozens of motorcycle and mountain bike wrecks that were my fault.
One was in a Honda that crushed around me and let me and my family walk away, the other was a piece of off highway equipment I was testing. I was doing gradibility tests and the ground gave away. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to a rest on it's side. They just hooked up a crane, popped it on to the wheels and it was good to go. No real damage to the vehicle. Me? I was tore all to hell. I was bruised from head to toe and had multiple lacerations. Had to get stitches in my head. I had my seat belt on but I flopped around everywhere in that cabin.

So Alex, I will always take "the vehicle that crushes over the rigid vehicle that does not," for 500 please.

All that kinetic/potential energy has to go somewhere...and if it doesn't go into the vehicle, odds are it is going to go into YOU.

They do when someone is killed or seriously injured. Normal accidents you are correct, only obvious vehicle defects will be noted. If the accident ends up in lengthy litigation with a large sum of money involved they may inspect further as well.

I’ve only seen it investigated in deeply looked into when someone is suing. When it goes legal and deeper then just an insurance claim they will check for every outlet possible. But this is rare and usally when they are trying to peg a drunk driver or very bad wrecks and such

That's great, but if I'm looking at the right product, those look to be $15.40 + roughly $7 shipping.
I'm personally more interested in a simple $5 solution. It's just a steel, rectangular rail that needs a durable, appropriately-sized plastic end cap. If other TW members are interested in the same, then I'm eager to help them out.

Center High Mount Stop Light is the real deal name. But third brake light is a lot easier.

Yeah, I had to google it. Just a stab at him since realistically who the hell refers to it as such

I've always been curious why they were there, too. I highly doubt they are there for front end crash protection. My guess is what @Critical05 said, to protect the end of the steering rack from debris or bumps.

I served on a jury and saw some pictures I wish I have never seen, and trust me, the prosecution outlined every nut and bolt and wire that car had. So yea, I have had direct involvement with a car being scrutinized for it's safety features. And, again, I started off with DO WHAT YOU WANT. I was merely cautioning against this due to the case I served on. Enough said.

Have you tapped something against these pieces? They are paper thing steel. They will do nothing in a collision. They look to protect the power steering components

My brother got a job as an adjuster for Geico a little over a year ago, and the several weeks of training they put him through was intense on how to assess a vehicle for damage. He was flown out to their school on the east coast where they essentially train their adjusters to become auto mechanics, so they know exactly what to look for on a damaged vehicle post-crash. He went into that gig not knowing how to change his own oil, to now...where I basically go to him whenever I need work done on my truck lol.

My point being, they're pretty thorough about it...at least Geico is. Almost made me want to consider a career change just to get the kind of training he did.

Also...fuck Geico. Even with the family discount he could get me after becoming an employee, they were still way overpriced
