The Manual calls for 10k changes for normal duty usage and 5k for Heavy Duty use.

I just bought an 18 on friday and they told me whether the miles are there or not, come in every 5 months and then you get 5 services out of your 2 year. the 5th is actually month 25 but that is allowed if you are due on a 5 month rotation.

Engines and oils nowadays are alot better than they used to be. This said 10k seems to becoming standard for normal usage. But like you, I will also be performing mine every 5k.

Our old cars that we sold (2001 volvo and 2001 saab) both had 10k intervals. The volvo was over 140k when we sold it. It looked like the original owner used dino oil upto 40k when we got it. It was fully synth after that. The only problem was a plugged up breather valve in the intake due to that dino oil. The saab was sold to a neighbor just shy of 110k. It is still going strong 4yrs later.

Our Forester has a 7,500k interval. No problems so far at about 40k.

All of those were hot running, high pressure turbo motors.

The Taco with the extra big radiator to keep things right were they should be? No problem. There's the oil analysis thread mentioned above to back that up.

This is just my opinion and method.

Too many people who have had too many oil analysis done that have said you can go further than even 10K!
Your choice, but making a thread on it just let's people post logic instead of what "feels" right.

when I had my 16 I didnt drive it alot and didnt have 5k on it till I owned it a year. when I went in for 5k they dont even do the oil change. 5k is tire rotation and check/fill all fluid levels. They said see you at 10k for your oil change and I said "no u wont" I just traded the truck in friday for an 18 and the 16 had 7800 miles on it. (16 months old)

If I only drove 5K/yr I would change it yearly too. I drive about 30K/yr so...

The salesman told me they would change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles under the Toyota plan if that was what I wanted. I contacted the dealer to schedule the 5,000 mile service and they wouldn’t change the oil/filter until 10,000 miles. They wanted $79.00 for an oil/filter change.

I called another dealership and the contact lady said they would change it at the 5,000 mile service under Toyota Care. I took the Tacoma in as scheduled and was told by the service writer they couldn’t change the oil/filter under Toyota Care until 10,000 miles. Turns out their appointments are scheduled through a service in Houston. I knew they charged $53.00 for the oil/filter change so I had them do it. The service writer used a coupon and only charged $39.00. Full Toyota synthetic. He had me download an app to watch for coupons. I’d like to think I will start changing my own after two years but I will be an even older fart who enjoys drinking the dealerships gourmet coffee, eating their fresh donuts, snooping around the new trucks and then taking a green young salesman for a “ride.” I taught some pursuit driving for a short time. Still like to practice.

And then there are records for CARFAX.

Really the ONLY way to determine a proper OCI is to have professional oil analysis done. For the first oil change I'm going by the manufacture's recommendation of 10K miles. I'm going to have the dealer collect a sample for analysis. In a modern vehicle, a 5000 mile oil change sounds excessive to me. But we'll see what the analysis says after 10,000. If you really want to get fanatical about engine oil, it's worth checking out the Bob Is the Oil Guy website and forum. Engine oil science is a hobby and obsession with the people on that website. It's worth checking out. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

Synthetic oil doesn't break down as fast as conventional. I went full synthetic in my 2nd gen and changed oil every 10k without issue.

full synthetic in a modern engine throws the 5k oil change out the window. Technology has come along way since conventional oil was the norm.

I am trying to understand OP's point..

Is the problem that you think 10K is too long and oil change interval?

    OR

Do you feel that 2 years of free PMs is cheap on Toyota's part and that they owe you more free PMs?

Just curious, I got no free PM's on any other new car I have previously purchased, so I thought it was a pretty decent "perk" from Toyota.

OP can feel free to not accept the five free services which include two full synthetic oil changes and pay out-of-pocket for above or do it himself...

Life has options, take it or leave it I guess. Toyota is trying to make it easy for owners of their new cars. For the hour or so it takes for them to rotate my tires and top off my fluids and do a safety inspection, which is probably as long as it would take me to do it myself I can browse the lot, check out the new cars, maybe even go for a test drive , get free coffee and donuts and use their free Wi-Fi :D

Edit: now that I reread his post, it appears that he’s complaining that 10,000 miles is too far between oil changes, which is what is recommended by the manufacturer and is the norm with other manufactures now as well with synthetic oil. But as others have said there’s nothing Saying you cannot change the oil every hundred miles if you so choose, Toyota care will only do it for free at 10, and 20k miles give or take (or once a year for first 2 yrs), you pay for the others.

I agree with this. Toyota provided owners with "free maintenance" in the first 2 years, so no complaints here.

And who are we to argue with the modern science of synthetic oil, and the fine scientists in white lab coats at Toyota Motor. If they say 10k intervals is recommended, then I'm changing mines around that time.

I was talking to the parts guy at my toyota stealership and he said to leave the factory oil in the engine cuz it’s a special break in synthetic oil with a ton of zinc in it. ANYONE EVER HEARD THAT? He said doing a break in oil change is totally unnecessary and the engine is better off with the “high zinc” syn oil.
