IMO I think 10k is way to long, both my GMC's (2011 &2015)were changed every 5k w/full syn oil from the dealer for two years. And they also gave free lifetime state inspections plus every other service that toyo care provides.

I have heard that before. Not from Toyota, but from other manufactures. Car and motorcycles. It is sometimes referred to as break in oil.

In the old days, folks would break in motors with straight weight oil and swap it out at a certain time.

I wouldn't expect that to be noted in the manual since it is the factory fill. When factory break in oils were discussed in the past, some folks felt that the blend and weights were even different than stated in the manuals.

Also, if I remember correctly, the EPA testing is done on a motor after it is broken in and driven for a while. They redo the testing for two or three cycles. It was talked about quite a bit a few years back when a local motorcycle manufacturer was going through the process.

They use break in oil when the engines are tested. Then drained and filled with regular oil during installation into the truck. Every engine is tested and drained during manufacture.

I have seen videos of the factory testing drive trains at final assembly. I've never heard of them draining the oil? I'm not saying that you are wrong, just that it is a new one for me.

‘14 Ram and ‘16 Jeep got the first oil changes free by the dealer. ‘13 and ‘14 Silverados free every 6,000 miles to 24,000 miles or two years provided by GM. ‘15 Honda CRV, free oil changes as long as we own the car provided by the dealer. They want to change when the oil life reaches 15% but I take it around 7,000 miles. These vehicles see mostly highway miles.

I am old enough to remember changing at 2,000 mile intervals. Owners experienced a lot of agony and skepticism when the intervals were extended to 3,000 miles. I am trying to adjust to the much longer intervals of today and attempting 6,000 to 7,000 mile intervals unless I have been pulling a trailer. I use pure synthetic when changing my own.

The threads about oil analysis are convincing. One member on another forum after a long discussion about oil change intervals suggested changing oil at “whatever floats your boat intervals” if that will give you a warm, fuzzy feeling.

I think Honda is the only Manufacturer that uses a form of Break In Oil, they recommend leaving the Factory Fill in for a specified time.

Like I said, I use it also and I hope it came across nicely enough?

I hate to pile on, but racing oil use (500mi, dumped, and motors torn down) doesn't translate to our usage. There is great R&D going on there, but that isn't the oil that we buy. As fun as it might be, I wouldn't want a racing motor under the hood of my Taco either.

I use Mobil 1 too because I think it is a good value for the money, not so sure it's the "best" oil out there though.

It's not a racing oil, but they use it.

I have witnessed it in the 4.0 myself. I have heard it (from a Toyota engineer - not the ones that go to the dealers lol) is the same for the 3.5's. Fill, test, drain, ship, install, fill was the order of operations.

Wow. That is really interesting. When you think how pennies are pinched on materials and such, more or less wasting 6qt of oil is really surprising. I wonder if they filter and reuse it?

    Thanks for the info.

Shipping wet would cost more money. A gallon of water is 8lbs. What's a gallon of oil?

    Less than water.
I would venture a guess that they have calculated the savings of warranty claims versus material cost in the past. Plus that goes with reliability.
I also think they reclaim the oil somehow by putting it through high flow low micron filters and reuse it. Should be no problem really to get it cleaner than what it was new. Remember when they cold filter beer to get rid of the bacteria that they only filter down to 3 micron or so and a high end oil filter can get you to 4 micron. More than enough to get any debris out of there. Might have to add back their additive package for the fluids though.
