I've seen the posts bitching about how fragile the windshields are on the 3rd gens. Over a combined 375k miles on my two 2nd gens and 40k miles on my 16, I've replaced 2 windshields. My first year with the 17 and I'm on my 5th glass. Anyone reach out of corporate? If so what was your response?

    Thank you.

Nice fat rock chips that spider. I don't tail gate, drive crap roads or follow behind large trucks.

As a 26 year Autoglass Replacement Tech I can say ALL manufacturers over the past 10 or so years have really dropped there quality of glass. Its alot thinner than it used to be because of wieght.
Honestly my best advise to everyone is NOT TO USE SAFELITE.
I worked there for years until they sold out to Belron around 12 years ago.
ALWAYS request to your insurance company a local glass company ( mom and pop shop ) and if at all possible ask them to use PGW or My choice is PINKERTON/LOF brand much better quality and stonger glass. There really is a difference

This is like the flat stock tire threads. There are too many variables to point fingers, although I agree the glass doesn't seem like the toughest.

I've taken a good 3-4 really big hits at highway speeds. Only one of them chipped the windshield, and after filling it, haven't had an issue since. YMMV.

Could be worse, my X5 windshield is starting to crack, and it’s $1500 that insurance won’t pick up the whole bill for. Lol

I don't want aftermarket glass as it bows in at the corners, looks cheap. I use above all auto glass which has been doing it almost as long as I've been alive. I can only imagine what would happen if something of real force hit my window.

Sorry for the long post but every needs to know this info.
Its like buying car audio from Walmart then buying the same thing from Bestbuy and compairing the two.
    No comparison.

I took the factory tour and saw a windshield that broke before it made it into a truck (couldn't tell if it was for a Tacoma or a Tundra).

Is acoustic glass more susceptible to cracking?
Is replacement glass acoustic, like OEM? Is the buyer given a choice?

How fast do you drive? I took a pretty good hit from a rock a few weeks ago and while there’s a noticeable mark, it hasn’t started to crack yet. I go the speed limit, which maxes out at 55 until you get about 3 hours away. If you routinely drive significantly faster, than can have an impact.

I also have $0 deductible insurance specifically for this reason. Windshields are expensive and I’ve had to pay to replace them before. Not fun...

Wow, you are really tough on windshields.

I use Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Glass Coating. It won't stop a rock but it does put an extremely slick barrier of protection that is so hard it increases the chip and scratch resistance of your windshield. I've found it makes a big difference over time.

Like most things the prep work makes a big difference in how well it works. I use a clay bar made for glass and Griots Garage Fine Glass Polish. It is supposed to last longer but I usually do it once a year.
