so will 4.88's be between 3k and 3.5krpms at 65mph then? Id rather go with 4.88's to gain a little bit of torque instead of forking over $3k for forced induction. I can use that money for front and rear Detroit lockers

you can calculate rpms w/ simple math. what is current gear ratio, tire size and rpm at given speed (say 70)?

Also, 4.56 is stock, 488 would give you more power. I don't think you could go wrong with either. I think 488 would be better for your situation and give you flexibility to turn 35s in future, haha. I can't testify to the front diff. don't know anything about it.

If i run 4.56 gears and put on the 34" tires i plan on getting do you guys think i will be able to have some torque in 2nd gear while off roading. Right now with 4.10's and 32/10 tires I am able to spin my tires in the dirt in first gear but once i shift to second the rpms drop right away and my truck just put puts along. When i regear do you guys think i will be able to spin 2nd in the dirt. Or is that asking to much from a 4 banger.

travis im guessing you have .81:1 overdrive? so with 33" an 4.88 it should put you around 2.6-2.7k at 65

ya no problem. if you use the gear calculator on this site they dont take into account an overdrive ratio they use a 1:1 for final drive gear with is great if you decide you want to drive on the freeway in 4th :)

Final question. If decided to go 4.88 instead of 4.56 for the little extra power is my truck going to pay for it.

mike running 4.88 with a 34" will put you between 2.5-2.6k at 65

it all depends on what you do more: offroad and need the lower gearing or 65+ driving for extended periods of time. shit! if your never out and about and always trail and city driving why no go 5.29 :p which would put you 2.7-2.8k at 65

Hmmm Hmmm......I like the sound of the extra power. At 65mph with rpms at 2.5-2.6 is that to much on my engine if stay at that rate for about 20-30 min a day during my commute to school. Are these high rpms going to hurt my engine. I rarely go over 65.

I have no idea lol. I asked chris 4x4 which ones he thought id be happier with and he said the 4.56 because of how much I drive...75-100 miles a day

Here I am, finally! (I have a job now that actually requires me to work, so I haven't been on the forum nearly as much)

4.56 gears with 33" tires will put you right back at the stock ratio which is optimal. You have to realize that the Toyota puts alot of thought and engineering into those ratios and you'll be most satisfied with performance if you stick to them.

I didn't do all my mods in the same time, so I got to experience both ends of having the wrong gears for your tires. Here it is in chronological order:

Put 32s (265/75/16 BFG All Terrains) on a totally stock truck

-Had trouble staying at 75mph in 5th gear whenever their was a wind or I was going up hill.
-Gas Mileage went down to 19-20mpg
-Had to offroad in 4LO to get any power at all
-Had to rev up higher before shifting
-Speedometer read slower than I was actually going

Installed K&N Air Filter and removed secondary air filter
-Didn't have trouble staying up to speed on the highway
    -Gas mileage stayed at 19-20mpg

    Re-geared to 4.56

-Gas Mileage went up to 20-21
-RPMs were kind of high on the highway
-Speedometer read WAY faster than I was actually going
-Shifts were at much lower speeds
-Bitchin' torque when offroading and "off the line"

Put 33s (255/85/16 BFG KM2s) on, putting me back at the stock ratio
-Feels great to have the shifts where they're supposed to be
-Have normal RPMs at highway speed again
    -Speedometer is dead on
-I don't know what my MPGs are going to be exactly, but the few readings I've been able to get are pointing to what I was getting with the stock setup (21-22mpg)

I chose the 255/85/16s instead of 285/75/16 because they weigh alot less, give much better traction, have less rubbing issues, and are taller. For more info on running narrow tires:

Also, If any of you re-gear, make sure to keep your stock 4.10 gears and sell them. It's what the V6s need to be at stock ratio with 33s so selling them should be no trouble.

I got a deal on mine, the cheapest I hear someone getting gears for a 5 lug is about $100. I thought I was going to pay $200 for gears. I can not wait to get some 32s on my Tacoma.

BTW, hows the KM2s working out for you?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
They will fit on stock wheels and not touch the UCA. You will still need a lift. There are a few members running those size but I am not sure if they need the full 3" or just 2.5".
