hes not married, but once u been dating someone for a long ass time and know u wont be with any one else, its easier to call her ur wife at that point cuz gf just seems like an under rated name for someone who is that special

In Texas after living with your girlfriend for more than a 6 month the state considers you to be “common law” married. Basically married without the marriage certificate. Your good and @Bocsy44 ias right on the money

    *Edit
If you have lived as husband/wife, agreed to be “married” and have told others he/she is your wife/husband then common law marriage applies.

NC got rid of their common law marriage like 15 or so years ago (man it doesn't feel that long ago). I think this day and age the younger generation like to "date" for extended times prior to actually marrying. Also you have the thing where marriage is truly a religious endeavor just taken over by the gov't (not getting political or religious, just facts). Like my brother and sister both didn't get engaged until they had been dating their wife and husband for like 6 yrs or so. I am more old school date if you think it'll be make the plunge don't really believe in the perpetual gf/dating whatever state. I think there are a lot of societal changes that have caused this more than anything.

But to each their own and if they are happy more power to them it beats being in a shitty marriage and just staying married because it's easier.
