Another keyless entry + remote start post, needing information

Hey mates; quick question if anyone else has done this to their 2014 Tacoma: do you need a DBALL2 module to install something like this Viper kit?

I drive a very basic 2014 model, with power windows, but no alarm or keyless entry. My little understanding is that this DBALL2 thing works as some type of bypasser, but I am not sure it will be needed as I don't think my truck has anything to be bypassed in the first place?

Also, would a DBALL3 be fine as well, if needed? They seem to be cheaper on eBay, so if I need them and they also work, that might be my route.

If you have a base model (like I do), you do NOT need a

$59 DBALL2 Databus All Combo Bypass Module

DBALL2. It can simplify wiring in an alarm, but for remote start it serves no purpose on the non-immobilizer trucks (only base models, SR5 and above have immobilizer and would need a DBALL2/3)

 

Thanks, kind sir! Do you happen to know of a cheaper alternative? Trying to keep this as cheap as possible considering I'll probably get forked another $150 for the installation. And my damn windshield just cracked today, so it's already going to be an expensive day, haha.

 

You certainly aren't going to find a Viper alarm/remote start combo for less than your Amazon price. As someone who works at BestBuy- you can get a remote start + install for $300 (check out the packages online) but it won't be an alarm combo...just remote start. The SKU if you buy that kit on Amazon and have us install is $240 on its own, plus a $5 material fee.

You may have better luck going to a local car audio shop and getting a cheapy remote start...but if you need keyless entry, plan on spending over $250 out the door.

Indeed! And sorry if I am being stupid here, but yes, very much so a base model, just didn't know if the power windows would for some reason affect this. No chip on key or anything like that... So you are saying that because of that, just the parts alone that come in that Viper kit should be enough to get the installation done?

Just called one of the places that can do it in my town and the guy said I would need the module for sure and that "I needed to buy that part from him"; and of course, he charges $99 for it... Nothing can ever be just easy haha.

 

Yeah. If you have a base model, you don't have an immobilizer that needs bypassing. The power locks/windows don't have any effect on needing a bypass. That kit would be more than adequate, and you'd only need to pay for an install. Some kits might need a relay or two, but the installers would let you know (like $3 each usually) during install, and they would have the relays handy.

My personal setup is a

Compustar FT-7000AS brain, Compustar Prime 901 2-way remotes,the RPS Touch module (gives a windshield keypad for when I want to lock the keys in the vehicle when biking, skiing, surfing, etc.), and the EZ-GO hands-free entry module.

Is it overkill? Yes. Is it awesome? Damn right!

If you have a base model like you say, and no blinking red light by your clock when you lock your doors...you 1000% do NOT need a bypass module. That installer is lazy and doesn't want to wire in the extra few wires. Find a different installer that won't jerk you around.

Honestly, putting the bias of being a BestBuy employee aside- the installers are very good and know their stuff...sure you pay a little more for installation, but they warranty it.

I will try Best Buy again. Do you think they would recognize they don't need the module?

The cost seems to be $199 for a keyless entry + remote start + alarm, but if they don't charge me for anything extra, that is still some $90 cheaper than this other store. The issue I had with Best Buy when I tried this before is that they had no one that knew how to do these installs (small town, small Best Buy). Thanks again for the help mate!

 

Yeah then you don't need a bypass module for sure...trust me lol. I have a 2013 base and we're in the same spot.

If you go to a BestBuy and the installer is unsure tell him to call 080-458-2711 from their phones, and ask for Brian in AutoTech. He's my installer, and is #1 in the company for the past 3yr. That number is an internal transfer number, in case you're wondering lol.

Just so you know also, you can have a panic button on the keyless entry, this way you don't need a whole alarm system...that'll keep the cost down. I personally prefer 2-way systems (like the one I listed, and the one you posted about) for the convenience of knowing the vehicle received the command, or if something is going on. MY remotes let me see the inside temp of the vehicle (handy for those NY winters), as well as the battery voltage.

So some $350 when it is all said and done... I guess I can try to chew that one up at some point in the near future. Do you know if they ever have any sales on the installation or coupons for it, or is it always this much?

$350 for product & install for a 2-way remote start/security combo is extremely cheap. I paid just shy that with my employee discount, albeit it was a much nicer Compustar system.

There's sometimes packages for remote start + installation to keep cost down- but you're looking for alarm as well, which makes it much more labor, and different brains (Viper only- Compustars are modular).
Your best bet would be to call a BestBuy and talk to an installer about packaging things down based on what our current sales are. There have been times where it's cheaper to buy a Compustar remote start, and add the ALARMIT kit when it's on sale.

I'm running a Viper Smart Start system in my 02 DC Pre Runner

I can remotely start , unlock/lock and GPS track my truck from anywhere in the world . I can even set it up to notify me if it has moved

And all is controlled from my smart phone

 

Yeah... My thing was just trying to get it all done for under/around $350.

Unfortunately everyone keeps saying I will need the DBALL module regardless of having a base model, which is adding another $100-$120 to this, regardless of where I look at. Needless to say, I feel like you know more about this than most of these small shops, so its just getting frustrating that they are trying to charge that at this point.

BestBuy might be the way to go after all.

 

Would that include keyless entry install as well? I suspect it is part of an alarm, but who knows...
