Standard spacing between counter top and bottom of upper cabinets is 18". Im reading that some builders/remodels are moving the upper cabinets up and making that space 20" (mostly to accommodate countertop appliances like stand mixers).

Do any of you have the 20" spacing in your kitchen?
    How do you like it?
Did it make the uppers too tall for practical use?
    Would you do it again?
    Photos??[/QUOTE]

I spent 30 years in the kitchen & bath industry.

18" from countertop to cabinets is the norm, but there is no law, code, or reason that you can't deviate up from this to whatever you like. 2" will not even be noticed.

Stock & semi custom cabinets are commonly available in 3" increments, (9,12,15,18, etc, up to 60") so there is no "too tall". Just buy shorter cabinets, if you are up to a bulkhead, ceiling, or need the space for crown moulding. Obviously you will lose storage space with shorter cabs.

True custom cabinetry can be had in 1/8" increments! The ultimate in flexibility.

Standard face frame type cabinets in the US typically have a recessed bottom, roughly 3/4". LED or halogen puck lights are 2 popular choices.

Our friends to the Great White North, usually have frameless or Euro style cabinets, which have a flush bottom. Recessed area would need to be added.

We are starting to see more frameless cab
offerings in the US, lends itself very well to contemporary styles.

I have argued forever that all you you really need are some good knives, a few good quality pots and pans, and virtually nothing with plugs. Unitaskers suck (DO watch it all the way to 4:20 at least). I thought I had my wife pretty much straightened out on this.

Then this happened at Christmas. My wife asked for this. And my MIL got it for her.

After biting my tongue nearly clean off, I'm coping buy buying a new work bench and tool chest in the garage.

Oh I can assure you it is NOT ON THE COUNTER. That is for the coffee maker, and coffee grinder, and toaster. That is all. And knives. Oh wait and a kettle.

Since we are buying everything new, a friend reminded us ‘it will all break at the same time.’ Just fuckin great...

We are going back to high quality basics and only getting what we really use (almost daily). I loathe one-use items. Sorry man.

Coffee maker, grinder, kettle, toaster oven and crock of cooking utensils. I kept the big stand mixer stashed until needed. Too much clutter otherwise. Even knives go in drawers.

    See above.

Took a while to convince the husband on the toaster oven. The fire helped... just two and heating up he whole oven just for our meals is ridiculous.

I agree on the high quality basics. it's amazing how much stuff one can accumulate over the years.

and as far as the toaster oven, we bought one when we were living in an extended stay for a month waiting for our house to close (only had a stove top in there). we will not not have one again. it's just too damn convenient
